I know there very accurate cause I useed to have one but thinkin abdout trading my 243 for one...


Basically wats your thoughts on the 17hmr cause i need something thats cheaper to shoot than the 243...

is a 17hmr a good choice...

would prolly just plink,shoot coyotes,crow,turtles and stuff like that cause im gettin bored on my two week furloughs a month @ work...

I thinkthey are limitingto be a goodchoice for the bigger varmits like yotes. However know guys who use themwith 20 gr bullets &limiting distance/shot placement. For plinking, small game/varmits & youngsters they are superb IMO.


Sheridan, I have no experience with the newmarlin 917's (2009 models). However have had experience with several 917's prior to 09andmost needed trigger touch ups to get the best of them. Also some needed free floating work, basically hawgthe barrel channel to remove stock touch. WhileI liked the marlins, when i bought a 17 hmr 2 years ago I ended upwith the CZ and Savage as being the front runners. While not as nice in fit & finish I ended buying a Savage b/c it was less then half the price of the CZ. I have put 1000 + rounds thru the savage and the only thing i have done is clean the bore regularily. It shoots 1" or better with both 17 and 20 gr pills,I couldn't be happier in its performance in regards to accuracy. The Accutrigger came set at just under 2lbs, I can reduce it more if i wanted but being the kids shoot it won't. Best of luck.

I had a Savage Model 93 with bull barrel and accutrigger. Was by far the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. It done everything that I asked of it very well with the exception of being cheap to shoot..lol. First time the ammo doubled I sold out. When I say shoot good Im talking cover all 5 with a quarter at 100 all day everyday. If you are looking for a 17 look at the Savages. You WONT be disappointed.

I agree - the Savage is very accurate. The Marlin is too from what I understand.There are others out there that are also accurate. But for the $ the Savage is probably the best bang for the buck. My Savage, with Remington Premier ammo, it will punch a 5 shot ragged hole at 50 yds no problem and at 100 yds it will shoot easily 1/2" - 3/4"groups.

I can't see trading a .243 for 1 unless you NEVER even want to think about reloading and have a cheap .243 such as the handi-rifle. You're going to be trading down. Why not take up the wonderful hobby of reloading instead?

I had a 17 HMR and found it great to shoot but prefer my 22 WMR instead for plinking and coyotes...
