Default .460 S&W as a rifle cartridge

Indiana will allow rifles used with handgun cartridges. How would a .460 S&W in a 20 inch Thompson Katahdin barrel perform?

I imagine pretty awesome. I am getting 2000fps with 250gr XTPs out of a 10.5" barrel. I bet with a 20", you would be kicking 2300fps easy. Too badthe460 generates 50KPSI or more, or Marlin could chamber it in a lever.

Hey Cubfan56,

The 460 is a fine cartridge and nice deer round.
I have a gun shop in southern Indiana and the lever action rage is on, for sure.
e-mail me at [email protected] perhaps I can help you find something?

I was fortunate to take a nice 8pt this year with my 41 mag 1894 Marlin

Should be fine! Think 'bout it, .other handgun cartridges gain a bit on rifle platform/longer bbls so this one shouldn't be much different. I'll find out myself later this year when the 31 in .460 becomes available.

Thanks for the input , it was pointed out to me that I read the Indiana regulations wrong. Maximum case length can only be 1.625 . I think i can get a a .44 mag or .357 chambered barrel.

The 454 Casull is only 1.383 Long and delivers around 2,000 LBS KE from a 7.5" barrel. The nice thing about the Casull is it also allows you to load 45 Long +p at 1,300 LBS KE and standard 45 Long Colt loads at 500 LBS KE. It gives you a great power range and for deer you really only would need the +P LC loads.

I checked with Thompson Center custom shop and they wont chamber a barrel for .454 . so I am probably going to get a .44 mag which will be fine for what I want .
