I guess better is a matter of opinion. I was deciding on one of these also. My gun shop/gusmith owner told me the 460 is more versitile. You can shoot 460s of course, but also 45 LC or 454 Casull.
With the 500 you can only shoot the 500 S&W round. And unless you are going for T Rexes (and I haven't seen any in a while) it is probably more handgun than you would ever need. But that's my opinion. BTW I decided on not getting either and I am going to stick with my S&W29 44.

I have shot both, and own a 460smith. The 500 is just too much handful for me. I can easily get 3MOA groups with my 460 out to 200 yards at the range. But I found out the hard way, about 50 yards is all I can free hand in the woods. I struggled to get on a buck this year at 90 yards free hand. And I just couldn't get the job done. But I have the 10.5" barrel, and its just too front heavy.

I would go with the 454 instead of either of those..well, i did go with the 454..here is why..the 460 versatility is IMHO overshadowed by the fact that if you shoot anything other that the 460, you are going to have leading issues...also, 460 brass is a bit on the expensive side...the 500 is a good piece, and dont get me wrong, the 460 is a shooter as well, but load data for the 454 is more abundant than that of both the 460 and 500 combined...if you are rich and plan to buy factory rolled ammo, then disregard this post, but for reloading your own, 454 is the way to go...hell, even if you are going after t rex the 454 is still overkill...you wont be able to kill anything deader or quicker with a 500 or 460...but, then again, the 454 has been around for a while and the 500 and 460 are both fairly new, hence a higher CDI factor (Chicks Dig It) for both of those, with the 500 hedging out the 460 according to recent poles..(size does matter it seems..lol)....whatever you get, have fun with it

What are planning on using it for? If you're just talking deer hunting, I'd say neither. You can use a .44 mag or .454 Casul that'll work just as good for normal handgun ranges, be a lot cheaper, easier to find ammo, and much less recoil. Now the .460 will get the job done better at long range (100 yards+) than any other, but of course you need to be able to shoot it well enough to take advantage of it - long range pistol shooting takes some time to master.

so what u r saying is buy a 454 why not buy the 460 that can shoot the 454 460 or 45lc and have the option then the load option r endless wouldn't that make more sence? im just tring to figure out if it would be a good buy to have the option, i relize it is a lot of money but if u where to buy the three sepertly then it would b 2 times the money. i have a 357 now and would like to get something a bigger.

what would the range b on this gun with the 454 and 45lc loads.30 50 yards?
i just try to buy a couple new guns a year and am just unsure

Personally, I'd go with a .44 mag. For any hunting that you will probably do with a revolver, the .44 will do it!

no, what im saying is if you are going to buy the 460, versatility is not as it appears...if you fire 454 or 45lc loads out of a 460, you are going to get a leading problem in your chamber...this will make cleaning difficult and if you fire too many of those 454's or 45lc's, then you wont be able to chamber a 460 in it without some hardcore knuckle busting cleaning...to me, it made much more sense monetarily to buy a 454 and the reloading componets, develope a load the my raging bull liked, and stick with it. as far as range and caliber performance, the 454 seemed the better option for me..i can load anything from 185 grain bullets at over 2000 fps to 390 grain bullets at 1300 fps....effective range is as good the load you pick, ie, a 185 gr at 2000fps is a bell ringer at 200 yards all day, and longer ranges are a distinct possibility...my current pet load is a 300gr xtp leaving the barrel at 1700fps...with an estimated 8 inch diameter kill zone on a whitetail, my maximum point plank range is 173 yrds...pretty dang good for a pistol, and that 300 grain slug is still moving at 1173 fps and still pushing 916 foot pounds at that range...plenty good enough for deer, and at 100 yards its pushing 1200 fpe..plenty enough punch for elk....i know the 460 is just as capable, but i simply wouldnt go that route unless the 460 was what i wanted to shoot...and 460 is gonna cost more to shoot and reload cause its new and shiny....
