7mm-08 vs 7mm remington mag
 

As I've heard it put, "The 7-08 is to a 7 Mag like the .308 is to a .300 Mag", sorta puts it in pretty good perspective to me. 7-08 may be a bit friendlier to the shoulder after an afternoon at the range (feels more like a hot 30/30 round to me, but I've always thought the recoil from it was thumpier than my .06), however in the field you won't notice it. Have Browning A-Bolt in 7 Mag, Remington in 7-08...pretty out of the box. Enjoy both. 250 - 300 yards, I can easily hit it. And what either one hits is going down with a swiftness... Why pick just one... I have 3 J frames and 4 1911's, etc...

I often think in deer vs elk terms due to living in the Colorado mountains I suppose. I'd pick the 7MM-08 for whitetail, the 7MM Mag for elk.

7MM Mag is very easy to find, not sure about the 7MM-08. May differ from region to region.

Just bought some ammo for my 7MM STW...speaking of ammo availability. The counter guy at Big R acted like he had not heard of the round in quite some time. Which is quite believable. Why some rounds take off while others do not is a subject of endless interest.

I have a few 7mm Mag and the wife and I both have 7mm-08's. Both do a fine job on deer. If I was going to get long shots or go out west I'd go with the 7 Mag. My favorite deer cartridge happens to be the 270 Win. I've killed more deer with the 270 Win then the two of us have with any of the 7's.
