270 win Ammo?
I wanted to know why they don't make a load bigger than a 150 Gr for the 270, or if they ever will come out with a 165 or 180.

RE: 270 win Ammo?
That's great, but those aren't factory loads are they? they are for re-loading which I don't do. How hard is it to re-load your own shells?

RE: 270 win Ammo?
Mark - The optimum bullet for the 270 is the 130 grainer. Some like the 140 gr. A good well constructed 130 gr bullet is adequate for all NA game excluding the big bears. For deer - the old reliables Rem core lokt or Winchester Power Pointare fine. You do not need a premium bullet for deer.

RE: 270 win Ammo?
I wanted to know why they don't make a load bigger than a 150 Gr for the 270, or if they ever will come out with a 165 or 180. A bullet weighing more than 150 grains reduces the velocity to an extent that it completely defeats the purpose of owning the flat shooting .270 cartridge in the first place. With a 160 grain bullet you would be looking at about 2600 - 2700 fps and with a 180 grain bullet you would be looking at 2400 - 2500 fps. The BC and SD of a 150 grain .277" bullet isequal to (give or takedepending on the exact bullet) an identicle bullet weighing 180 grains in a 30 caliber and would be perfectly suitable for hunting even the largest moose. Basically, if you need a bullet weighing more than 150 grains then get a cartridge that fires a larger diameter bullet...... IE: 30 calibersuch asthe 30-06. |
RE: 270 win Ammo?
They do make a 165gr bullet for the 270. May be hard to find but my father in law has been using them for years, I use the 165s in my 308 as well. its more accurate than the 150 and lower.

RE: 270 win Ammo?
165 you can get only as a reload....
I shoot 130gr hornady SP out of my Rem 700 270 Stainless...Kill ANYTHING that steps in front of it...shoots straight as can be. Great whitetail gun... |
RE: 270 win Ammo?
Thanx for all your help guys, I love my 270, but now i'm thinking about adding a scope to it. I am not to familiar with scope selection though. At this time I hunt hard woods with good openings and shots up too 100 yards, but I also hunt with another group, and my stand is on the edge of a field, so I need something that will be good for both. All I have now are fiber optics on my 270 pump.
