RE: .270? A versatile do everything gun?
I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who gave input on this thread. I went out this weekend and after looking for a 25-06 and only finding them way out of my price range or junk I decided on a .243 Savage. I never would have picked it without all the good words that were said about it here. Thanks for convincing me to take a second look at it.

The .243 with 55 grain bullets will shoot coyotes like a 22-250 and with 100 grain bullets will dump deer and pronghorns dead in their tracks.....guaranteed!

I hear that the Savages are more accurate than the shooter and are generally more affordable then the competition. However, I have a taste for higher quality rifles.....

I killed a lot of elk with a Savage. I think you will be happy for a long time with it. You are right about one thing for sure, it sure is nice to come on here and get great advice from people like big bulls. I almost always ask for opinions on here before I purchase any gun.Post up a pic.
Congrats on the new gun. ![]() |

RE: .270? A versatile do everything gun?
ORIGINAL: bigbulls A 270 and 30-06 are so close in performance they are pretty much used on the same class of animals and are better suited forantelope to moose rather than varmints to antelope. I will be looking for something that I can shoot anything from coyote’s up to antelope and do a little more long range hunting and target shooting. I think a .243 would be too small for much of the uses I want For animalsin the varmint class to antelope and deer a .243 Winchesteris as perfect of a cartridge for this job as there is. Ditto... How on Earth could anyone think a .243 is too small for coyotes and antelope??? |

If you really don't want a 243 then I would look hard at 257 Roberts, 25-06 or a 260 Rem.

I think you will be happy with the 243. I used it for many years for deer and it pretty much stopped them on the spot. I had one that went 10 feet but the rest dropped where they were hit. I cannot say the same for my 7mm Mag even on great hits. Not sure why but years ago I read an article on sectional density and it makes some sense.
The only down side I saw on my Remington was that the barrel was so light that if you put too many bullets through it the impact point would start to drift as the barrel heated up. But out to 200 yards it is as good a deer gun as any others and I think 300 is not out of range either although I never have shot out that far at a deer but I think the ballistics hold up out that far. You will not be disappointed. |
