The Winchester 300 Mag has one so many long range championships it would really be hard to count. Now I am talking long range 1200 meters the 308 is a great 100 yard gun and very good to 200 - but the 270 is better |
RE: 308 or 300 win mag
There are few inherently inaccurate cartridges out there. Most out-shoot the nut behind the butt.
The 300WM is about as accurate as they come...for those who don't flinch at the recoil. The 308 is NOT a long range round. It is good for people who shoot a lot at modest distances and are concerned about barrel life. FWIW I just shot an elk at 683 yds with a 300WM, it hammered him. I would not have shot that big of an animal at that range with a 308. |
RE: 308 or 300 win mag
IMO if I were to get a new rifle and didn't have either chambering, I would go with the 300 WSM. I like the 300 WM but the WSM come mighty close to it ballistically. The short fat case of the WSM in theory is more efficient and I haven't seen a rifle yet in this chambering that didn't shoot well. As for the 308, I had a couple and shot game with them. But the round simply does not impress me at all.

RE: 308 or 300 win mag
Define "long range". And what do you plan to use the rifle for?
Out to 300 yards, my choice would be the .308 Win. for both punching paper and hunting deer or elk. If you're just going to punch paper then the .308 would also get the nod for anything less than 500 yards. The .308 is known for great accuracy and isn't too finicky if you handload, and the recoil and cost will be much more tolerable if you like to shoot a lot. For bigger game (elk+) beyond 300 yards, I'd probably go with the .300 Win Mag, or .300 WSM if I were to stick with a .30 caliber. The down side is that if you like to target shoot, the magnums will punish your shoulder and wallet a lot more than the .308 will. Mike |

All depends on the use. As said above... let us know what you plan to use it on?

RE: 308 or 300 win mag
The .308 will punch paper a whole lot farther than 500 yds. Twice that easily. Many a man has died at ranges beyond 500yds, from.308 holes. More everyday. Check out Camp Perry
Many elk and deer have been put down by the trustworthy.308 as well. There are lots of bullets too choose from. It's all about placement. Holes kill, not impact. .300WM is in a class all it's own. It can put some big bullets in the boiler room way out there with ease. It comes with a recoil toll. If you want to shoot steel plates at 1500yds or more The .300WM would be my choice. A 225gr. bullet is going to reduce your doping for wind a bit. If you want reach out and not pay a heavy recoil toll go with a .308. JMHO. |
RE: 308 or 300 win mag
Between the two I would take the .300 WM all day long. If the recoil worries you get a Sims recoil pad or buy a Remington with one of the R3 pads on it.
