I don't think you can go wrong with a Remington Model Seven. 20" barrel and about 6 lbs unloaded. It's also availabe in a Youth model.

A competent gunsmith can fit the rifle to your length of pull if need be.

The Custom Shop also has some other variations of the Model Seven that are lighter and accurized, but cost more.

I'd suggest .308 or 7mm-08, with .308 being my preference for more available factory bullets/loads.

If it's in your budget Remington is probably the best "factory" rifle you can get right now.

The 7mm-08 is a good choice for young people, women and Men!

Of course there are lots of custom and semi-custom guns that are better.

Of the big factory gunmakers Remington is by far the best imo.

Let me guess you're a Savage or a Ruger fan?

My vote is for the excellent browning a-bolt in the micro-mediallion model in 7mm08. I started my daughter out on the 7mm08 and to date she's dropped everything she's aimed at cleanly with her lil 7mm08. My favorite deer rifle is the (no longer chambered) .284 a-bolt.
