What length screw can I use ???

I just bought a new Browning Shortrac in 270 wsm .
I also went to Gander and picked up some weaver grandslam mounts and rings .
On the package it tells you to grind down the front screws for clearance .
Only problem is it doesnt say how much.
This is a very small screw as it is .
I called weaver customer service ,and the guy says Oh, ya, I see what your talking abought .
I said this model has been out a few years now and others listed on the application for the same mount have been out even longer .
He says its the shortest torque screw they can get .
What kind of an answer is that , I,d like the right length screw , One that I shouldnt have to grind down to work correctly .
Anyone have this problem ??
I ,m going to take a ride over to a gun smith to see if he may have the right length crews .
If you look up Browning under Weaver mounts you will see what I mean .
Kinda frustrating , $ 1,000.00 GUN , $15.00 MOUNTS AND 20CENT SCREWS ????
Weaver seams to be laid back and not to concerned with the problem .

RE: What length screw can I use ???

Personally, after listening to BS like you did, I think I'd be returning the mount package, get a refund and get something that worked right the first time.
Yeah, you probably could chuck that screw up in a drill or drillpress and remove material until it didn't bottom out. But why should you have to?
Customer service like that is rediculous.

I,m thining of going a different route ,
I no it sounds like no big deal , but why should I have to run around and look for screws or grind on anything .
Makes no scents to me ..

Its like that with all scope mounts just about.
If they make the screw shorter, then some one will put it on a gun and it will be to short.
So its better to make the screw a little to long.
Its better to be a little to long than a little to short.

Just put the mount on your gun.
Thak a sharpee pen and mark on the exposes threads.
Then take a file with fine teeth. and just take a little off.
Just enaugh so that there is around a few thousand short of the hole.

If you are afraid to do it, pay a gunsmith to do it for you.
I am a gunsmith.
Where do you live?
I am in Seagrove NC 27341

I take it back.
I reread it, Did you buy the gun from gander mountain?
If you did, go back to gander mountain and tell them to fix the screws for you.
If you didn't buy the gun there, ask them if they will fix the screws for you anyway.
Just tell them you might be buying another new gun in the near futher.
I bet they will fix the screws for free.

By the way I like Leupold mounts better any way.
