winchester model 101

I have a friend who wants to sell me a winchester 101 12 gauge with a 26" barrel for $550.00. serial #86863. Its in good shape. I really want an o/u. My questions are,is this a good gun? What kind of hunting would it be good for with such a short barrel? And is that a good deal? Thanks, Ron

RE: winchester model 101

I have a 101 but in 20ga. I bought it used for $700 Can. and love it. It had a loose rib but I got it fixed for 50 bucks. As for barrel length I have a Red Label that has 26" barrels and it' s a treat in the field. After carrying it all day you will appreciate the lessened weight. I use it for partridge, pheasants, ducks & geese, trap and sporting clays. I think the chokes are a bigger factor when determining what you can use it for than barrel length. I' d say go for it if it feels good to you:D
