Best 308 ?
Gentlemen, what would consider to be the best 308 on the market today?

RE: Best 308 ?
Best? I have a Remington Model Seven I' ll never get rid of...:D

RE: Best 308 ?
That would probably depend on how much you wanted to spend. I have a Tikka in .308 Win that I really like. It shoots well and looks nice. I paid about $500 for it.

I have a Remington 7600 in 308 that I love.

RE: Best 308 ?
I' d have to say for me it would be the Savage model 10. Cheap to buy, unbelievably accurate, and you can put some of the money you saved on the rifle into buying a super scope for it. It now comes with the best factory trigger on the market called the Accutrigger. Check it out, you may be very glad you did.

ANother vote for Savage. I would have to go with the Savage model 12BVSS or the 10FP-LE2B. Very reasonably priced and amazingly accurate.

One other factor enters into this choice. What do you plan to use it for? A lot of .308' s are sniper or long range target rifles, so the requirements here are much different from those of a hunting rifle!!:)

RE: Best 308 ?
Had a savage 10FM mountain rifle that was sweet to carry at 6# but needed a cooldown between every 3 or 4 shots. My favorite is a model 99 308 with a Vari X lll on it,perfect balance and handling.

RE: Best 308 ?
carpie, so many choices. Hard to pick from Browning, Rem 700 BDL, Win. Mod 70, Tikka, Sako, Savage and so on. It really boils down what fits you personally, both in gun and price. I have had nothing but good things with a 308 Rem 700BDL and my buddy loves his Abolt by browning also in a 308. Haven' t heard anything but Tikka' s are shooters and now all I hear about on here is Savage( " Maybe by ugly but are shooters as well" ). So I guess the long and short is almost every way you turn you' ll probably end up a happy camper...go with your heart and what feels so sweat you can' t put it back on the rack. You' ll be happy, I' m sure.
Something to keep in mind if you have a budget is the scope, don' t buy a SAKO and then drop a piece of junk glass on the top. Much better to go cheaper, reliable gun with a great piece of glass on top, JIMHO. If the vault is open than all I can say is have fun and disregard this last statement;) [8D]:D |

Roger that Skeeter, helpful again.[8D]
I think I have managed to narrow down my choices so far. I would be mainly hunting through bush, sometimes open and sometimes thick. Talking with some of the lads in my area, the rifle of choice seems to be the 30-06. Very rarely do they see a .270, but have seen the .308' s on occaision. I' ve yet to go out on a rifle hunt, but have been with a bow both as an observer and participant. I liked the bow hunt so much I went and bought a crossbow. And if I add a rifle to my gear I can hunt from mid Sept. straight through to the end of Dec. I agree with you about the feel of a rifle, and will most definitely have to try a few first. We get some real cold weather over here, sometimes over night, during the full deer season so I' ll need to find something to withstanding the cold as well. To make an informed decision I' ve had to answer these questions; What game do I wish to hunt? Deer, Moose, Bear Where will I be hunting that game? Thick Bush, open wet areas What caliber will do the job? 308 or 30-06 What are the typical weather conditions during that game' s hunting season? warm and wet to very cold with snow Which rifle manufacturer best suits that " sweet feel" , costs and reliabilty? still searching I don' t mind paying a bit more for quality, I can save up. For an decent rifle, up here, it costs anywhere from $1000.00 (Can.) and up. I' m interested in the Savage Model 110GXP3 Long Action rifle at the moment with a 9x40mm scope, mounted and bored sighted. Locating one to hold, feel it out and try it is a chore I am looking forward to, but a chore just the same. Then I can eliminate Savage off my list if it doesn' t work out the way I am hoping.[X(] And so on and so on...:D So many choices for sure.... |
