30-06 or .308

RE: I need a recomendation on a centerfire
Might I recommend a Tikka. MOA accuracy and an adjustable trigger. I have a SS Varmint in .223 and it shoots under 1/2 MOA when I do my part. This is with cheap American Eagle ammo. With handloads it's scary accurate.

My personal preference for a mid priced gun would be a Weatherby Vanguard Sporter in .308 or 7mm-08. Either cartridge will do the job you want without hurting the shoulderand the Sporter is an accurateand well made gun. I also like the standard24" barrel.

I would recommend the Tikka T3. This is an excellent gun that shoots great out of the box, has an adjustable trigger and the smoothest bolt in a production rifle. This is the best value for your hard earned dollar.
As far as caliber, I vote for the 7mm Rem Mag. I feel this is the most versatile hunting rounds available. Just my opinion. |

A couple other recommendations would be Howa or Browning. The best thing to do is to handle as many as you can and get the one thatfeels the best to you.

30-06 in a bolt rifle that fits you.
That assumes you know what good rifle fit is, if not then get some help with it. Brand isn't as important as fit. Would avoid the low end Remington 770 though. |

Well there is quite a bit of stretch in betweenthe Remington 770 and the Beneli R1 but if you are looking to spend less money and something with not too much recoil then you might not want to get a 300 win mag. Ruger M77, Remington SPS, or Tikka T3 Hunter are all good options for the money priced right at around $500 each. Since you want a .223 but cannot hunt with it then I would suggest a .243 or 25-06, maybe even a 7mm-08.

Weatherby Vanguard or Howa 1500 in 7mm Remington Magnum.
