I'd go for the .30-06 honestly. The .270 is a great gun.. But the .30-06 is just my favorite all around gun. It can bring down elk, deer, hogs, anything like that. Also out to about 325yrds it shoots very true. As long as you arent shooting past that then the .30-06 is my rifle of choice.

270WSM.

Killed plenty of deer (every one I've shot at with this gun) with the 150 grain Ballistic tip.

Let my dad borrow it for an elk hunt and he took a monster using Winchester Supreme Elite (150grain).

You guys know these post starters are really people from other boards who pop over to see if they can make us explode by asking questions like this...and everyone seems to fall for it every time..lol....257 Weatherby Mag....280 Rem....just figured I would add two more options that are better than anything mentioned yet..especially the 30TC infomercial guy..is he gone yet, he's annoying..the forum equivilent to Billy Maize...."the 30 TC, its the new 30-06, but wait, there's more!! It will even darn your socks, that's right. Buy the new tc and your feet will never be cold again...."

i used to shoot a 270 wsm befor i got a new barrel for it. i hated the 270 wsm, its way to overbored, way to loud amd doesnt live up to any of the hype that it had. i could shoot 3 shots within 2 mins of each other or the bullets start walking all over the paper, up to 10 inches in some cases

Sounds like a rifle problem not a cartridge problem that you had. So I would not put the 270wsm down just yet. I am getting more velosity then advertised with my gun. Plus I am getting 1/2' to 1/4" groups with mine with Winchester 150gr. Power Points chronographed at 3200fps.

Here's my two cents on why I take the .30-'06:

First, I don't know a thing about .270 WSM (sounds like a nifty round, though). What I do know is that someone with a .30-'06 is going to be just fine in virtually any hunting situation that demands a big game caliber.

The big question for any caliber is if its suitable for the game and conditions. With the '06 the answer's almost always yes, and many times it's magnificently so. What seals the deal for me is that it's just hard to go wrong with a .30-'06.

small groups and higher velocity arent everything. i think the 30-30 shooters can tell us that. and i doubt its a gun problem because my .270 wsm is now a 6.5 wsm (its got a broughton 5c barrel now)and other then lower recoil it amplified the problems that i mentioned.

just to keep the forum hot, i pulled out the ole Winchester Model 70 featherweight .300 WSM and shot her today. I havent shot the ole girl in a few months, and just shooting it just makes you feel so good. You all know the cadilliac commercial where the woman says when you turn on your car does it return the favor...well in a wierd way...thats how i feel about my .300 WSM. Still complaining about the price of bullets, but if you drive a lamborgini or a ferrari its hard to make them run off of plain ole regular.

I wouldn't trade my .270 WSM for any other gun.

You can't go wrong with either round. The .270 WSM will shoot flatter and you will have cheaper and more availible ammo with the 30/06. Personally opinion: if you shoot 300+ yds, go with the .270 WSM. If not, go for the less sexy 30/06---it just makes more sense.

+1 30-06. "If a 30-06 cant kill him I don't need him"
