New rifle...breaking-in the barrel?

I just got a new barrel for my Encore...its the 300 Win Mag. I was wondering if I should do anything special to break the barrel in or just go shooting? Thanks

All I try to do, and have read....is space out yoru shots, don't let that barrel gettoo hot.

I'm assuming its a single shot.....so that'll help space time between your shots.....

If you shoot say groups of 3 with some spacing, then a pause/break between the next set....usually how I operate, since I tend to shoot 3 to sight in.....after that just some spacing between shots.

I've heard you're barrel will shoot better with time up until a certain point....I think after 200 rounds I've read is when your barrel is shooting its best.

I just went through the same thing but it was a Ruger in 25-06....I found that the first time I went to the range I could not group anything, I think I shot a half a box and called it quits. I got home and cleaned the crap out of the barrell. A couple days later went back to the range and found it sterted shooting a pretty descent 3 shot group, I shot 8 3 shot groups and again quit, went home and cleaned the barrel good. I did this two more times and now the gun is shooting great groups and I am fooling around with different factory loads....
The first cleaning on that gun produced some nasty stuff out of the barrel and some type of metal particals, I asked the shop owner about it and he told me that the gun manufacturer's put some type of a thick coating in the barrel's b/c they never know how long a gun will sit on the shelf.....I have read before that guys will shoot 3 shots and clean the barrel but I did not take this approach, I was careful not to get the barrel too hot though...

I highly recommend you give your rifle to a quality gunsmith to hand lap your barrel.

Well, for starters, make sure you have cleaned the bore out well before you shoot anything thru it. I usually follow the same procedure as Ridge Runner on barrel break in but I add a two-shot sequence between the 1 and 3 shot cleanings. I've been doing this with guns I buy new for some time. It has worked well for me. It is true that some factory barrels are fairly rough, and need a good bit of shooting and cleaning before they will start to shoot decent.

Why pay money for a smith? Just do it yourself. Fairly easy.
