Slug Barrel,need advice
I want to buy a rifled slug barrel for my TC Encore and acnt decide between 12 and 20 Guage,I have heard great things about the 20
Could you folks give me some info on this? Thanks Scott |
RE: Slug Barrel,need advice
If your going to shoot modern sabots I would go for the 20 ga, more than enough to kill deer and the recoil will be slightly less than a 12 ga. Ballistics for a modern 20 are very close to a magnum inline muzzle loader. Even close to a 45/70 centerfire.

I've got a 20ga Pro Hunter. Haven't shot anything with it yet. But it is accurate.

20 gauge, Hornady SST's or Lightfield Slugs

RE: Slug Barrel,need advice
I've only shot 12ga, but if I were to buy a new slug gun, it would be a 20ga.
Its your call, but IMO there is no reason to NEED a 12ga slug over a 20ga. |

Thanks guy's
I have been known to over gun myself in the past when a lighter caliber would have worked just fine,I am learning to match my gun to my hunting and not my ego. |
RE: Slug Barrel,need advice
That gun will shoot comfortably in either 20 or 12 gauge so I don't let discomfort of firing be any sort of deciding factor.
I favor the 12 because with a modern slug and rifled barrel shots can be taken at pretty substantial distances with predictable accuracy. It is at these distances where the 20 is petering out that the 12 gauge carries the bang to the party. |

20

RE: Slug Barrel,need advice
I have a 24" blued 12ga barrel and a 28" Pro hunter 20ga barrel. I would recommend the 20ga Pro Hunter. The 12ga just needlessly beats you up. The 20ga drops deer just as well and since you are in Fl., I doubt you will have any shots over 150 yards. The 20 will be plenty of power for you and the Hornady SST's shoot well.
