The .303 Savage is about the same power as a .30-30 Winchester. The Winchester 190g Silvertip loading has a muzzle velocity of 1890 fps. This would fine on deer out to about 125 yards or so. The bullet won' t have a great trajectory with the slow muzzle velocity, but due to it' s relatively heavy weight for the diameter - it should penetrate very well.

The Savage 99 is a great lever action. Your rifle should be fine as long as you aren' t trying to hunt clear cuts or fields.

Thank You GTBuzz. Can seldom see past 100 yds.

RE: 303 savage

My dad, who owned a gun shop most of his life, used a 303 Savage almost exclusively on deer. I know over the years that he sure piled a lot of deer up with that gun. However, I don' t think there is anyone making factory ammo for it anymore!! You may want to double check that, but I think Winchester stopped making it a few years ago.

Anyway, I agree with the other post that mid-100s would be the best range for that gun.

You' re right about the ammo.

This would make an excellent deer rig, if you scap the buckhorn rear sight and replace it with a receiver peep sight or a low-powered scope. You might be able to get ammo from the Old Western Scrounger.

I just checked- Old Western Scrounger has .303 Svage ammo. However, it has 170-grain bullets....

Have used 170 gr. silvertips in my 3030 for years, no proplems. 170 gr. should work just fine for you
