Savage 16FHSS
I am thinking about buying a savage 16FHSS in 300 wsm. Does anybody have any opinions about this gun or just savage guns in general?

RE: Savage 16FHSS
You will probably get a ton of opinions on Savage rifles - most of them positive. As for this rifle, I have a 116FLSS (the L stands for lefty) in 30-06 as well as 4 other Savages. With the right loads, every one of them will shoot sub MOA if I do my part. They may not be the prettiest girl at the dance but they are well worth the $.

RE: Savage 16FHSS
I recently purchased a 16FSS in .243 and topped it off with a Mueller tactical scope. I'm happy with it. Haven't really got a chance to shoot it yet, but I'm happy with the build quality and what not. I have had other Savages in the past and I was perfectly pleased with them, normally pretty accurate out of the box, especially for the money.

RE: Savage 16FHSS
I have weather warrior model in 06, it shoots factory ammo at about 1.5" groups.
The accutrigger is a plus especially in a rifle at this price. I am happy with the rifle and have recommended it to a friend who is also pleased. |
RE: Savage 16FHSS
I've had onein 30-06for about 10 years so its pretty old didnt have the new trigger or anything. I replaced the stock and the trigger to the new accutrigger. And its my most accurate rifle.

RE: Savage 16FHSS
I never found savage rifles all too appealing, though I've heard good things, like nice quality for the price....shoots well, etc....
I just think they look pretty plain, simple, etc.... And my view on a rifle isn't "good value for the price" I want something that looks nice/great, and shoots great too. If that means it's not a great value? then so be it, I'd rather pay a fair/ok price for something awesome, then to save a buck and get a deal of a rifle. So really, its what kind of rifle are you looking for? just a rifle to shoot/functions? then sure, check them out. If you want more than just a rifle that shoots/looks ok, there are many others out there to consider. |
RE: Savage 16FHSS
Here is my older 116fhss in a .300wm .I took that pathitic fiber stock off and put on this laminated one from midway for $149.00.It willshoot aboput 1"moa with factory ammo and just a tad better with my reloads.

RE: Savage 16FHSS
Not sure why anyone wouldn't think that Savage doesn't make any guns that look good. 114 American Classic 300 wm.

RE: Savage 16FHSS
that's the best looking one I've seen, nice wood.

RE: Savage 16FHSS
Thank you. It is kind of a hybrid in a ways. It is a 114 American Classic but with the hinged floorplate, Monte Carlo stock and open sights which normally the American Classic comes standard with none of those features. I bought the gun at a Cabela's in Gonzales, Louisana and Savage told me it was a special order for Cabela's. For whatever reason Cabela's wanted the American Classics but with a hinged floorplate instead of detachable box magazine, open sights instead of no sights and a Monte Carlo stock instead of it's normal straight stock.

RE: Savage 16FHSS
I have a 30-06 with a synthetic stock, some would call it a Tuperware stock. It is a good rifle especially considering the price.

RE: Savage 16FHSS
Yea that wood looks like a step up, I wonder if cabelas, or because it was for cabelas they may have picked something a tad nicer, vs jsut whatever. Most ive seen seem to just be plain american walnut......it is what it is, I just don't see myself buying a savage anytime soon. I like synthetics nowadays, though I think on an african rifle I'd want some really nice walnut.....

Here are some of the guns in Savages line up.
Centerfires ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rimfires ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Every one of these are butt ugly and I wouldn't take one if you gave it to me:eek:. Savage is not what it used be 20 years ago, they make some very nice looking rifles that shoot very well at respectable prices. The nice thing is even the cheap ugly ones still shoot good. Paul |
RE: Savage 16FHSS
This is a twin to my rifle except mine has the hinged floorplate and I like the wood on mine better than what is on this one.

RE: Savage 16FHSS
Everyone admires a rifle with beautiful AAA wood, however I just wouldn’t feel right taking it “OUT” hunting.
