only your gun knows what it likes best,a 165 grainer should shot well a150 or 180 may shoot better, you'll just have to give them a try, hows the trigger on that ruger, mine was horrible until I bought a rifle basics adjustable for about $80 and now its great.just give a few different bullets a try and the gun will tell you!!

i like a softer trigger i am gonna get my gunsmith to give me a trigger adjustment out of all my guns i like the tikka trigger the best and find it is the easiest to pull and it is self adjustable wich is great

I like a easy trigger also,my ruger compact breaks under two pounds after I put the rifle basics trigger in,its easily adjustable.Good luck with your bullet choice.

Personal view of the .30-06 is you either shoot 150gr, or 180gr. I'd try a bunch of other ammo/brands etc...

I'd look at the 150gr, I think thats ideally suited to the 06 case, then if you decide to go for elk or bear or something big and need that big bullet, id use 180's but if youre deer hunting etc.....150's seem the way to go IMO.

Each rifle is an individual. If you lined-up 1,000 m77 Hawkeyes, they'd be like 1,000 fraternal twins, not identical twins. So each one's going to have its own "appetite".

I've shot 150's, 165's, 180's, and 220's out of my '06 (not a Hawkeye)- several different brands of each. Andthat rifle consistently likes to "eat" 165's far, far better than any other bullet weight. I used to fret that this was unacceptable, and that the rifle should tinkered-with such that it could print tiny groups with 220's. Only thencould I count on John C. Holmes-like penetrationwhen shooting game.

Then I came to my senses, & realized that 165's have been used for full penetration on elk, moose, and African plains game, & that I might as well get over it & go shoot some animals. You can see the results here: http://www.hunting.net/forum/tm.aspx?m=2680641 I'm so glad I chose to remove thatself-imposed burdenfrom my shoulders!

So try 2-3 brands of ammo in each weight, & let your rifle tell you what it likes to eat.
