S&W 460 XVR Pistol
I'm thinking about buying a pistol. One for carrying while deer hunting, so it must have a six inch barrel and also to take on any future bowhunts in big bear country, (for around camp). I've been looking at this gun and debating about getting it. What can anybody tell me about personal experience with it or other pistols that might serve the purpose well.
Thanks Dan |

Supposedly it's a terrific revolver but man if they make it in a 6" barrel you better hold on tight! [:-]I couldn't imagine shooting that shorter barreled .500.
I know "Bigcountry" here has one........ Oh and I JUST got this in an email coincidentally. For the record if you get one don't do this!: [:o] http://www.3dshoots.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12910 |

IMO the revolver you are talking about is a primary hunting weapon. It sounds like you are suggesting that you would use it as a back up??? I would not consider this a back up weapon. Tom.

The guy in the story claims to have been shooting a 460 but the gun in the photo is a 500 (look on the barrel). |
RE: S&W 460 XVR Pistol
Well, I learned one thing this year with mine. One, hearing protection is a must. You have to have some quality game ears that canceles out a shot noise. Two, muzzle flash is extreme. Three, I still can't beleive I can pull off 5" groups at 200 yards with a revolver.
I shot at a doe this year at the edge of dark. I was blind for a whole min or more from the flash. I was deaf, and think I did perm damage to my left ear. Ringing went away about 3 days later. Its very heavy, and very extreme pistol. If your a experienced pistol shooter, and have had 454's and ligher 44's, then its a great gun. But if not, its not for a new shooter. I am getting 2100fps with 48gr of H110 and 240gr XTP out of a performance model 10.5" barrel. |
RE: S&W 460 XVR Pistol
For a backup revolver I would suggest about a 4" barreled .44 magnum or even a .454 casull(my fav) as the .454 is able to shoot .45colt ammo for practice. I personally think the HUGE heavy X frame is too much of a good thing, especially for a backup. I've NEVER felt undergunned with a .454 casull.

RE: S&W 460 XVR Pistol
Let me clarify my question. The gun would be used during the gun season for deer and thats why I'd need a 6" barrel, to meet regulations.
Thanks for the info and its great to learn while researching something. I would have never guessed these pistols could inflict that type of damage on the user by placing your hand up forward. Could a .357 do damage like that as well? The reason I ask isI had a .357 twenty years ago with a 4" barrel that I carried for backup while bowhunting for elk in grizzly country. Honestly I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with that. Its been a while ago and I gripped it with two hands, both probably wrapped around the trigger/guard. Secondly, this gun, the 460,can shoot the 454 casull or 45 colt as well as the s&w 460. Or am I reading it wrong on S&Ws website and it comes in those calibers? And is 45ACP the 45 colt, got this from cabelas ammo catalog. I've not actually been to a dealer yet looking, I'm researching on here first to learn as much as possible first. Thanks sorry for the long post Dan |

RE: S&W 460 XVR Pistol
Dkbs-the .460 WILL shoot the .454 casull and the .45 colt(.45lc),as they are simply shorter cases. The .45acp(automatic colt pistol) round is different from .45 colt, rimless, and was designed for the 1911 pistol, however with another cylinder or moon clips can be used in .45 colt revolvers that are specificallydesigned revolvers ONLY.
