Savage 24F .223 over 12 gauge
 

Anyone own one of these? Comments? I thought it might make a good coyote gun.

Sure if you can find a new Savage they bothered to regulate both barrels to hit anywhere close to one another!I had a 30-30/20ga for about a month and dumped it as the shotgun hit about 2ft below the rifle sights even with Kentucky windage!The rifle shot MOA at 75 yards with open sights.Too bad.On the other hand I own a Sav24 .22/.410 that is bang on[when QC mattered]It throws baseball sized patterns at 20 yards.You can actually break clays with it every time.Can't seem to pry it away from my 15 year old son as he's laid claim to it! Good luck with the new Sav24's they look like they were finished by a blindman with a rattailed file.........................Harold* there's agroup of guys on the 24 collector's corner that all bitch about the same problems with the new Sav 24's. Great idea poorly regulated barrels.

Mine is .22 Hornet over 20 gauge. It does work well on coyotes and the barrels shoot to the same point of aim. However, the gun is very heavy.

Well if you have a good one ,keep it.The idea of a combo rifle /shotgun is very practical.I'd make it hammerless with selective ejectors and one trigger with a barrel selector like the Browning Citori with intrical Weaver bases milled to the reciever.You shouldn't have to regulate the barrels if it was done right the first time at the factory but some sort of adjustment easy adjustment system would be nice.Preferably for rimmed rifle cartridges only ie .303 Brit,30-40 Krag,45-70 over a 20 or 12 ga with chromed barrel for all shot and screw in chokes.This should have run the cost up.Sounds like a Merkle!I'd be happy if they just fixed their barrels and went hammerless and they'd still have a functional utility gun.............Harold [stainless?]

You're right about those older 24's being great little shooters, Harold. I started hunting with a 22/410 MANY years ago as a kid. Killed lots of rabbits and squirrels with it. Got the hots for a 12ga. double, and traded it. Wish I'd never done that. Recently picked up a Stevens Model 22/410 with the tenite stock and forearm in nice shape. It shoots as good as my old one did. It's staying right here. Too bad about the newer ones having the POI problems you discussed. I was unaware of that. Just figured they were still of the same quality as the old ones. I guess I really should have known better, with what has happened to most all of the newer manufactured guns of today. Customer service and quality control seem to be terms used during staff meetings, and get left in the board room anymore. It's become a joke.

i have a .223 over 12 guage, i love it. i've had it for about 10 years now. Not sure about the new ones. the make a great fall turkey gun as well

I've go to agree with Pioneer2 on this one. I've shot a fair number of the Savages and very few of them have the barrels regulated well. If you do find the rare one that shoots the barrels together, consider yourself lucky and keep it.
