As I see it, Remington can market the Model 770 at a profit at this MSRP range because they are equally inexpensive to make. Be it labor, materials, machining, design ... matters not. They have found a way to make enough $$$ to justify at the coporate level to go for it.
We can all argue the points of "value". In my opinion, rifles such as these are ideal for folks trying to get into center fire, and who cannot afford or will not justify spending the $$$ that better made rifles sell for. I have no doubt that the Model 770 is adequated for hunting. A good friend of mine uses one in 300 Win. Mag. Kiills deer fine ! But I am also a skeptic ... by nature. And the selling price of the Mod. 770 makes me skeptical of the long term (20-30 years of use) value of this rifle.

The value of this rifle is the same as any other low cost rifle....a low cost point to obtain a rifle with no frills that will get the job done for those that don't want to or have no need to spend $500-1000 on a deer rifle.
When I bought my 710 (now 770), my son and I were just getting started in hunting, so every penny counted as we acquired some of the necessary equipment (outdoor clothing, tree stand, etc.). Not knowing whether we would stick with hunting or not, I wanted to get a deer rifle for the least amount of $$$ that I could. We hunted for 5 or 6 years and on a good year hit the woods maybe 10 times during the season. A couple of years ago the guy on whose land we hunted (for free) died and his sons (non-hunters and not living on the land) formed a hunting club and handed it over to some local friends to run.
Alas, now my 710 has been a sitting in the closet for the last two years as no offer was extended to us to join the club.
