Ruger makes a nice one ,but is around $400.00 . Marlin is quite a bit less and seems to be just as accurate from the people I have talked to . They sell as fast as they can get them in at the local gunshops. the ammo seems to be the big problem ,they are always waiting for a shipment and are out of stock .

I got a Savage at a gun show for $209 out the door.
It has a bull barrel and synthetic stock with swivel lugs.
I'm waiting for a scope to shoot it. My friend has the same model, and his shoots great.

Hey man,

I got the new england arms single shot. The .17's are deadly accurate. I have a long levee that I have food plots on for deer and the armadillo's were tearing them up. I went out there and put a dent in them, and I have no problem with taking a 100 yard shot. I have a 3x9x40 scope and I sighted it in dead on at 25 yards.

I know this is an old topic but ill sound off anyway. I have the marlin .17 vs i was shooting about 30 yards yesterday and got 2, 3 shot groups just under 1/2 in. this was from using a log with a coat on it for a rest and a heavy factory trigger. now i shot 22 rounds off yesterday wich totaled 100 for my rifle. i was shooting at traced circles around 2inches in circumfrence and is rather easy to keep all shots in the circles. Any squirrel or critter u hit with it is gonna die fast.

Go with the Ruger. If you don' t want to spend so much go with the Savage. The Ruger' s a quality rifle and you definitely get your moneys worth.

The Marlin vs that I have is extremely accurate, it shoots both the Remington and Hornady ammo at almost exactly the same. I let my buddy shoot it today at 100 yds and he shot 3 five shot groups you could cover with a nickel. It shoots Great. It will get even better when I put in a rifle basix adjustable trigger.

I have the 17VS marlin, and absolutely love it, I have shot about 2 dozen squirrells with it already and some out to 120 yds. Man Talk about accurate. I put a 3x9 8point simmons scope on mine. And at 50 yds I will put 10 shots the size of a quarter in the bullseye. This is just shooting off a bench with a pillow, and not sandbags.
