Need help - which rifle?
 

Hi all,

I am new to hunting and know nothing about rifle so here I am asking for help. I want to buy a cheap rifle in 308 cal ( I think 308 is cheaper to shoot) but not limited to another short cartridges such as .243 wssm, .270 wssm, and 7mm wssm. Any way the cheaper guns I can find are around $450 ($400 for the gun, $20 shipping, and $30 or so for ffl fee) if I can't find the rifle locally.

Here is the list of rifles. What I want to know: Accuracy, smoothness of action, and product quality, but accuracy out of the box will be the main factor here because I don't know how to accurizing it.

Howa 1500 youth rifle
Savage 11F
Tikka T3 lite
Remington 700 sps youth

The Stevens model 200 should run about $300. It is a Savage action without the accu-trigger. Good guns for the money. They won't win any beauty contest, but they are normally accurate out the box. I am not sure if you are trying to stay in the $450 range total or just for the rifle. If so, this would give you about $150 for a decent scope, such as a burris fullfield II 3-9x40, nikon prostaff, or maybe even a bushnell 3200. Quality glass and ammo is just as, if not more important, than a quality rifle.

Well i know the Savage, Remington, and Tikka are good rifles. I dont know much about Howa but havnt herd anything really bad about them. As for the caliber. 270, 308, 30-06 are all gonna be about the same price for ammo. Any of them rounds are good for deer. There are many more choices but those 3 you can get ammo anywhere ammo is sold.

You should be able to get a "package" gun at retail for around $350. I'm talking about a bolt action with scope, such as Savage or Stevens. Sometimes they're only offered in two calibers, .270, 30-06. Anyway, any of those popular centerfire calibers would be ok, and the ammo should be same price.

At least around here if you by factory ammo, 30 06 is cheaper to buy, so is 270. They are just more common

Get the Savage. Great out of the box accuracy. Their only downfall is beauty. Of course, that's how they keep the price down.

You will not go wrong with a Savage.

With the 700, you will "not go wrong" better....IMHO.

We were double checking my kids zero at 250last weekend....a straight up non accurized factory 700 BDL, .243 Winchambering, 2X7 Nikon.

1.2 to 1.4inch groups, 3 shot, prone, off bipods and packs.....the wind gusts, mid range, were givin' us fits all day long.

Never had a 700 pizz me off tho'................

I purchased a Savage 10FP (.308) bull barrel for $425.00. This is pretty much a sniper rifle and too heavy to carry hunting but it shoots sub-MOA all day and the accu-trigger is to die for. I will recommend Savage all day every day. I've been looking at the Tikka T3 in .300 WSM but have yet to fire one. The Tikka T3 Lite is light as a feather and I'm hopeful that the .300WSM doesn't produce a lot of recoil. I want short action but they advertise "Tikka Action"...whatever that is.
