Shooting 2 3/4 shells from a Mossberg 835

I've heard people say that you shouldn't shoot 2 3/4 shells from guns that are chambered for shells up to 3 1/2, like the Mossberg 835, because its not safe and it also affects accuracy. I can't really believe this is true, because why would gun makers make the guns toshootthe different sizes if it weren't safe or effective?

Also, I read thisarticle other day (link below) where a guy tested different size shells and could tell no noticable difference in the patterns from one size shell to the others.

I just wonder what everyones take is on this, because I am hunting with an 835 this season, and I was planning to use 2 3/4 sabots.

This information is true but for slugs

Shooting a 2 and 3/4" shotshell will in no way harm your shotgun. That reference is for deer dlug ammo omly due to the "freebore" before slug engages rifling.

I assume you've got a rifled barrel for the 835. Because the smooth bore is so over-bored I doubt it would be accurate with any slug. I've heard the in many guns thata 2 3/4" slug is more accurate thhan a 3".

If you are shooting sabot slugs then a rifled slug barrel will be needed andthe chamber on the slug barrel will only be 3" long and the bore diameter will be of proper size for the slug to engage the rifling.

Some smooth bore barrels of 3.5" guns(Mossberg 835)are over bored so you can't shoot rifled slugs out of them due to the fact that the bore diameter of the barrel is larger than the slug itself.

As far as shooting actual shot shells you can use anything from 2.75 - 3.5 inch shells with no problesm what so ever.

Everything Bigbulls said was correct EXCEPT the fact the Mossberg slug barrel on an 835 still has a 3.5in chamber. I have one and it dosnt give me any problem with 2.75in slugs. If you look hard enough you can find 3.5in slugs. My gun didnt shoot well with them and they were a little pricy on the wallet. Icant rememberwho made them though. Regular slugs are expensive but the 3.5in were about 2 times the price of the 3in slugs i shoot.

You're right, Retaks, my gun is chambered to shoot3 1/2 slugs from the 24in fully rifled barrel. I am notinterested in shooting the3 1/2 slugs. I'm planning to shootboththe remington copper sabot andthe Hornady sabots to see what works best in my gun. I was leaning towards the 23/4, but I've heardpeople say you shouldn't shoot 2 3/4 slugs from the835, even though its chambered forthem.

I got the Mossberg 835 Turkey/Deer combo, and I love this gun, but its the first 3 1/2 gun I've owned, so I am just trying to wade through theBS and find out ifI should shoot the 2 3/4 sabots orjust go with a 3in.

Iappreciate everyones feedback.

Interestingly enough, my nephew shot his first deer last year with an 835 that had a 28in smooth bore barrel that was overbored. He was using Remington 3in sluggers, and made a clean shot at 60+ yards. I wonder if he damaged his barrel by shooting rifled slugs through it?

Rcaddel,
I shoot 3in slugs. I honestly dont need to use them for most of my hunting but i like to have the little extra power. A 2.75in slug has plenty of power and will be no problem in your gun. The 3in slugs have noticably more recoil then the 2.75in. Get a box of as many different slugs as you can and see what groups the best. Mine shoots best with 3in Federal Barnes Expander. The next 2 in the list which are only .1in biger groups at 50 yards are both 2.75in rounds. As for your nephew he did not mess the gun up. What happens is the soft lead in rifled slugs can let the slug turn sideways in the barrel and get it stuck. Ive put a few slugs through mine just to see how they do. They shoot good for rifled slugs but i have the rifled barrel and will never go back to rifled slugs through a smooth barrel.

My wifes uncle just purchased a Rem 11-87 and the ownersmanual discusses the use of abarrel seal activatorfor 2 and 3/4 inch shells that should be removed for 3 and 3.5 inch shells. This might only be for Remington models, but just thought this may have been what rcaddell heardpeopletalking about.
