slugs

I'm shooting a Remy 870 12 gauge with a modified choke.
Can I shoot slugs, with this gun?!

RE: slugs

Yes you can shoot rifled slugs through it. I would recomend getting a Imporved Cylinder or Cylinder Choke for it before shooting slugs but it wont mess the gun up if you do.

RE: slugs

You can. But like Retaks said, you'd be better served with a more open choke. I am assuming you have a smooth bore and not a rifled bore based on the mod. choke. I've found the saboted slugs aren't the best in, at least my 870. I've tried several different brands of slugs both saboted and rifled. The most accurate out of mine is the Federal Tru-ball slugs. Try different brands and see what works best for you.

As said above ,but if you can not change choke tubes , you might want to pick up a slug bbl. for it . The slug bbl . also has rife sights if you want to use them and not a scope .

How much better did the True ball group? I've been using WW for years and just picked up some True Ball for my 1100 smooth bore and can't find a range in Florida that will let me shoot slugs . I have to wait to get to camp in Ohio to try them and that sucks , I have an itchy trigger finger this close to gun season.

Your 870 isn't the 3 1/2" version is it? You need to be careful about shooting slugs out of those.

Yes can you please explane. I have a Mossberg 835 with a slug barrel. It has a 3.5in chamber and Ishoot slug through it with no problem.

I do have the 870 express super mag. so it can shoot 3.5s. Why would that make a difference?

Thanks all for the imput.

My nephew has the 835 and shoots slugs out if all the time. Actually, he killed his first deer with it last year.

I would think it would be like shooting a 38 special from a 357 mag. pistol.

If you doubt anyone on this board, call Mossberg and find out about the 835! "Do Not Fire Slugs or Sabots from 835 field barrels". Barrels are back bored!!!!!

I have the 835 Combo.....Field &Rifled barrels....

You can shoot slugs out of it just fine. And as a matter of fact most of my smoothbores actually shoot more accurate with a modified choke instead of a IC, doesn't hurt to try both though.

The 835 is the 3.5 you can not shoot slugs out of because it has a larger barrel to improve patterns supposedly. But a remington 3.5 will shoot 2 3/4 to 3.5 inch shells just fine. I have a buddy that has a special purpose turkey gun and it will shoot anything we put in it. He actually uses a rifle barrel on it to deer hunt with.
