I will go try them both and see how they fit.I know remington makes nice guns we always had good luck with ares, and from past experiance and from everything I'm hearing here the 870 is probally a little smoother and a little quieter also,I'm also looking at different price ranges also, the 500 cantilvered synthetic rifled/scoped combo is 299.99 and the 870 rifled combo has iron rifle sites for 349.99 -30.00 rebate,is it an ISSUE to have a scope mounted on the 870 with iron sites or should the scope be mounted to a cantilevered gun, also the 500 has a 24in.slug barrel tho 870 has a 20in.

Just bought the Mossberg 535 pump for my son. Not a bad deal. Got two barrels, scope, set of chokes for about 350. Can't wait until Moday to see him shoot it for the first time. It's a little big for him but Doc did say it would be his growing year.

I don't think you can put a scope on If it is not drilled and tapped for scope. Not sure if the 870 with iron sights is drilled and tapped or not.

if I could find the 535 in the combo with a slug barrel with it I would be tempted to grab it the barrel with it at dick's is a waterfowl.

I seen my sons mosssberg 500 but 3 shots in one hole at the 100 yard target from a bench not bad for a low end shotgun;I think he uses remington copper glad sabot he mounted a older busnell scope on it when they were made in japan.I know it a 500 model but has a thumbhole stock I think he paid $319.00 for it at dick's last year, heavy gun and 12ga. shotguns are not for me these old bones don;t like recoil anylonger will stick with my flinters and round ball if I hunt a slug area.

I went and tried the 500 and the 870 I did'nt really care for the way the 500 felt well pulling it up,I suppose if it had a little longer recoil pad it would feel better,I liked the 870 a little better but the slug barrel on the combo is only twenty inches,I found another guy that is a dealer and he can get me a 870 with the slugster barrel its 23in.Rifled and it has a scope with the saddle mount 2x7x32 scope which I think has just a little longer stock on it for $291.60 OTD. plus right now there is a $30.00 Rebate on the 870 Express,$261.00 still leaves a little extra money to go toward a good scope.

Don't worry about the 20 inch barrel, a 23 inch barrel won't make you a darn bit difference. Does the combo with the 20in come witha cantilever mount? I'd personally stay away from the saddle scope mounts. You can't beat a cantilever barrel if your going to shoot a scoped shotgun.

No the 20in. does not have a cantilevered barrel, that's what vaslugger just said to me was to stay away from the saddle mount,I'm not so sure I even want to by an 870 after reading some of the reviews on the H&R ULTRA SLUGGSTER every one says its one of the most accurate shot guns they ever shot and there 199.99 at dick's by me right now.........Ted

Iprefer Remington's because of the steel receiver, reliable action and they fit me better.
But some of the best shooting barrels that I've seen are Mossberg's shootingall purpose loads atturket shoots with a turkey choke. They also have a convenient tang mounted safetyswitch.

arcticap,I actually think I am leaning toward the H&R ULTRA SLUG HUNTER,all I'm really looking for is a good slug gun,I have a win model 50 12ga. I was gonna get rid of but I'm gonna keep it,so I really don't need a bird barrel this is a sweet shooting gun,as far as a turkey gun the 835 mossberg will reach out and touch em with the winchester supreme's in the black box........Ted
