The only thing good that I have heard about Savage is their new trigger. besided that, not much.Everybody I know says that the savage, quality wise, falls a bit short.I suggest you look into a Remington 700 PSS in the .300 Win Mag. It has an exellent factory trigger, and YOU can adjust it yourself down as low as 2.5 lbs. That will shoot super out to 1000.It is a heavy barreled rifle, but you can use it up close with a lighter bullet all the wat out to range with something a little heavier.I don't know the price of the Savage, so I can't say for sure, but you might pay a little more for a Remington, but you will for sure be much happier.

I have a Savage 12FVSS in 300WSM. I have owned over 25 Remington CF rifle's in my life. I have not had one yet that would shoot with my 12FVSS. Do not believe alot of what you hear. Savage's IMO will outshoot most if not all factory rifle's out of the box. Believe that. Savage has a bad rep for their asthetics, and I agree with that. They do not look pretty, but they sure do shoot. I am not familiar with the 10gxp3-but I would bet that it will shoot. You will get alot of responses on this post-I am pretty sure most of them will be positive.
I did have a 700PSS in 300 Winchester Magnum that was a real shooter, but it was an expensive rifle. You can spend a lot more for firearms, but you normally will not gain more accuracy until you pass that $800 to $900 threshold. That much $$$ will get you a Kimber. The Kimber may not even outshoot the Savage, but it sure is a looker. Tom. |

RE: Savage 10gxp3 .300 Wsm
To be honest, I have never owned a Savage, not have I ever shot the one in question. Though, I am a military long range shooter, and I have had the opportunity to shoot some of Savages tactical rifles at ranges I have goe to. I have also had the chance to shoot some that were sent to a Sherrifs Department in California as test rifles. Not so much with their hunting rifles though. So NO, i don't just get my info from some forum.
I also know from pesonal experience that the 700 PSS shoots super out to long range. I went on a hunt in South dakota that was suppossed to be deer and Coyote.I took at 700 PSS in .308, and my partner took a 7oo PSS in .300 Win Mag. Coyote hunt got cancelled so we moved to shooting priarie dogs. SO it is a little big on the caliber for dogs, but that is all we had. We used those 2 rifles to kill prarie dogs out to 700 meters. We used a handheld GPS to mark off every 100 meters so we could range things better. SO I KNOW these will group at long range. I'm pretty sure that I said that the Remington might be a little more expensive. Most that I have seen at gunshops are, a little more then the savages. At least I didn't suggest something like the Accuracy International in a .300. Those are in the 4000-7000 dollar range. A much better rifle, but unrealistic for most. As far as the savage, if oyu like it, buy it. I have heard great things about the trigger. The ones I have shot, I don't get the luxory of making all sorts of adjustments. I have read good things about the rifle. And my own experience, for a litle more money, you get a better rifle with Remington. This is just meant to be food for thought. Before you buy just take a look around. Dcnobel asked how if we knew much about them. I just shared my personal experience. |

Off the topic a bit-but I did not know you could use GPS to determine short distances(hundreds of yards). Thanks for that information. I wonder how much one would cost that could be used for such a thing. Thanks, Tom.

so this is a little off subject. you can get a hand held GPS for less than 200 easy. You jsut switch the measurement to Military Grid Reference System. MGRS and go. It will give you .10 kilometer through a solid kilometer. As we all know, .10, or 1/10 of a Kilometer is 100 meters.
I am pretty sure that you can use most GPS and switch to standard instead of metric, but then figuring out the range thing is a little more difficult for example to get 100 yds. 100 meters is roughly 110 yards though Currently, I use Garmin GPS 12. I have had it since July of 1999. I think i paid about 175 for it back then. And since then, the price for the basic model has come down. You might find a good GPS for a little over a hundred now, without all the bells and whistles like road maps and such. |

Original:Beartooth375 are you making that statement based on some garbage you heard on an internet gun forum? Original:HEAD0001 Savage's IMO will outshoot most if not all factory rifle's out of the box. Believe that. ORIGINAL: HEAD0001 Do not believe alot of what you hear. Is this not a "internet gun forum"? I am so confused :D:D:D |
RE: Savage 10gxp3 .300 Wsm
I have a range finder and a gps but still don't understand how you get the gps to work as a range finder? Are you saying that you can sit on one hill and a dog can pop up and you can check your gps and it tells you that the dog is 700 yds??
I shoot a lot and have different rifles in different brands ,savage, rem, ruger etc.The highest price I paid for any of them was $750 and it was a tikka varmit. All will shoot very good some shot good out of the box but some didn't shoot as good.I have a 223 savage that when I first got it the barrel would drop down in the stock when I placed it on a rest, had it bedded and it has shot some one hole groups at 300 yds.Have seen and shot some that wouldn't shoot at all,saw one that didn't even have a firing pin in it when purchased. But love my savages but no more than my rem, ruger, browning and etc.All have good shooters out of the box and all have some not so good. I haven't shot the savage you asked bout but I believe it will shoot, especially if you find the best load for it.If this is the one with the ss fluted barrel,I saw one at the gun shop in 300wsm,270wsm and 7 mag and they sure looked good. |
RE: Savage 10gxp3 .300 Wsm
I don't use the GPS as a Rangefinder by itself. We set into a nice position over looking a nice long dog town. We took empty ammo boxes out and set them down every 100meters out to the fence line just shy of 800 meters. That is what I meant. I didn't mean to confuse you there. No, youare right, can't use it to look and estimate range, only to mark off your range, and use that as reference.
As for the thread subject. You said it yourself, you had to take your savage and get it bedded after you bought it, to get the performance that you wanted. After you gotit done, it now shoots 1 hole ragged groups. Maybe I was really lucky, but my Rem 700 PSS shot those 1 hoe groups right out of the box. I tuned the trigger down from the factory setting to 2.25 lbs pull, and that is it. To me, that is not an improvement on the rifle, but shooters preference. I have just had better experience with the Remingtons. I have shot savages too. Just preference. I have switched to an Armalite Bolt gun after my Rem 700 was stolen. .338 LM and that will shoot small ragged 3 shot groups. Recoils like a 243 with the muzzle break. But Rifle alone was almost $1700. DCNOBEL: if you like the savage, buy it, There are lots of people who swear by them. I haven't had the best impression shooting their tactical rifles, so I bunch them all together. This is just like the Ford Chevy argument. everybody has THEIR FAVORITE, based on THEIR EXPERIENCE. Me, I swear by the Remingtons and Armalites. I could always suggest my all time favorite of Accuracy international, but those are at a minimum about $5000. Good luck with whatever you finally chose. half the fun of getting a new gun is makingit perform how you want it to. |
