RE: .45 1911 Questions
If your wanting a 1911 then I say Taurus or the GI springfield. easy on the wallet.
But if your looking for Home Defense and you've never owned a semi, I'd get something else. 1911s can be quirky. You want reliable and stupidly reliable. XD or Glock.
Personally I've owned quite a few 1911s and one time or another they jam. Doesn't matter why but they do. I have 2 Glocks that never Jam. My 10mm was so dirty the crud came off in chunks and it still worked. I've shot them bone dry, wet, muddy, sandy. you name it still worked. I had a Kimber that I spent about 100bucks on different magazines just to find out which one worked all the time. Too much hassle to look cool at the range or bet my life on.

RE: .45 1911 Questions
Don't laugh, several years ago, I bought a AutoOrdinance...SN under 10k from a upstate NY PD dept in an auction. Someone had made a hardball gun.....match barrell/bushing/fitted slide and match trigger and poliched feed.. It was cheap, under 200...this thing shoots along with any Gold Cup I've ever owned! (at least on shillouettes) Most GI 45's are not matching parts.....
As with any 1911, it requires practice...Tarus is good, so's Kimber...
If you want to spend 5/600, I'd go a straight old GI.
just my dos centavos worth.

You could also look into the SIG Version. Someone had one for sale on this site some time ago. Looks like a nice pistol, and if it is like all the SIGS that I have should make you one hell of a pistol.
Just my 2 cents.

I second the comments about Para Ordnance. I have one and it is a great shooter. Para's are kind of like a combination of an original 1911 style .45 combined with the wide feel (double stack magazine) of a Glock.
Here's mine: Para Ordnance P13 .45ACP (sort of like a Colt Commander version 1911).
4.25" barrel, 12+1 round capacity.

If you're right handed I'd just go for a Springfield Armory mil spec model which can be found in great shape used for 275-300. Later on if you wanted you could tweak it if you wanted.

RE: .45 1911 Questions
I believe the Taurus would have to be my choice for another new 1911 .45.
I can't say anything bad about my Kimbers, Baers or that big dollar Rock River that fill mytop shelf.
But for a new one I would go Taurus and save ALOT of dough.

RE: .45 1911 Questions
I just bought the Springfield PW9151LP which is in stainless brand new for $480.00.
I've never bought a gun on-line before and this company was great to deal with. Called SNIPER COUNTRY PX. They have a huge selection of 1911's and can't wait 'till it gets here. Pretty reasonable I'd say. You have to mess with finding a local FFL dealer and all, but well worth it.
I got my wife a Springfield XD in .40S&W for mother's day and although it is great for her, (smaller hands, lighter kick), there's just something about the .45ACP in a 1911.
Get one, you will not be disatisfied.
