no one has heard of a model 712 but i have one.

Are you sure it isn't a 722 That is the model they made in 222 Rem .

It was manufactured 1948 to 1962

Western Field wasa brand name used by Montgomery Ward for decades. Your Western Field Model 712 was made for Wards by Savage. It is the Savage Model 840. Do not know how old it is but Wards quit selling guns over 30 years before they went out of business.
