Hornady 7mm-08 139 SP

I recently purchased my oldest son a Rem 700 SPS in 7mm-08. I have purchased a box of Hornady 139 gr SP. Has anyone used this factory load and if so, how did they shoot? Also, how did they perform on deer? Thanks for any info.

I have 4 rifles in 7mm-08 and have been using the Hornady sp bullets for several years with excellent results any deer I have ever shot just folded up. I have a Remington SPS SS that will shoot these under 1". I hope this helps chad

I own two 7mm-08s, and unfortunately neither of them care for Hornady factory rounds. Rifles are fickle like that. Yours may well love them above all else.

The Hornady SP Innerlock bullet is an excellent design, and will serve you well on medium game. As long as it shoots well out of that SPS, it will lay them out in the fall.

Like Swamp Collie, my 7-08 shoots them fair, but perfers 140 gr. Accubonds. The Hornadys shot somewhere around MOA, and killed deer real dead real quick, however. Feed it what it likes..........

Thanks for the info guys. My son is 12 and is stepping up from a crack barrell .243 this year. I have a phobia of ballistic tip bullets after seeing several fragment and not exit. I know that many will say that this is good since it "transfers all of its energy to the animal causing maximum damage". The problem is that if the animal does not fall immediately, tracking deer through thick brush and briars in south Alabama with no trail is extremely difficult even if he only runs 40-60 yards. I will try these 139 gr SP's and if I can achieve anywhere near 1 MOA, my son is more than capable of doing his job if the bullet does its'.

Never shot the Hornady loads but I have used the 139 grain bullet in my own loads with good success. They are an excellent bullet. However I have shot dozens and dozens of deer with the Ballistic tip with no problems at all. Not in a 243 however.
