The new .30 TC
So in reading about the new TC Icon bolt action built around the .30TC round, the article indicated that it would perform comparible to a .30-.06, as it/the hornady bullets would be loaded with powder containing 15% nitro. They also stated that this powder/powder combo would not be available to reloaders. Any thoughts on the performance claim, and the powder type they reported?

RE: The new .30 TC
Hornady has been doing this for years. Some sort of magic trick to make powders burn faster without raising the pressure. Apparently, no one has yet quite figured it out. Except that boy they got at Hornady who has been really earning his check in the last few years.
All of that Light Mag, LeverEvolution and the super hot .17 Rimfires have come out of the same celler...same guy from what I understand. And if Hornady is smart (which they are) they will guard that secret like tomorrows box scores, the meaning of life and the resting place of the holy grail. |
RE: The new .30 TC
The only problem is........... If you are the only company that can produce such veleocities with a new cartridge like this what hopes do you have as a manufacturer of it ever becoming widely accepted? Slim to none IMHO.
Why would any other ammo maker load it if it will only duplicate the .308 Win. with the powders they have or why would the reloader purchase it if they can't duplicate the velocities that Hornday is getting? Seems pretty useless to me. I am all for new cartridges but to have to purchase such a limited selection of offerings from a single manufacturer to get the performance claims is not a smart purchase IMO. |
RE: The new .30 TC
I agree 100% with bigbulls if I as areloader can not duplicate it I do not want it. I'll shoot the 30/06 or308 if i want short actions.

RE: The new .30 TC
Apparently the trick is out of the bag because federal ammunition has come out with there line called High Energy which with the standard calibers they offer in high energy loads are meeting and exceeding hornady's light magnum loads. Before too long Im sure winchester and remington will have the same kind of loads. when that happens the technology i would imagine will be available to the handloader, hopefully:). but untill then I will stick with my 308 and 30-06 aswell no need for a cartridge I cant duplicate or exceed factory loadings.

RE: The new .30 TC
i see the .30 TC as a solution to a non problem Wonder how many of these spiffy new cartridges will still be in existence 10 years from now.

RE: The new .30 TC
I agree that the new round is just another "new gimick of sorts" as a way to try to grab the attention and money of the consumers with no benefit over existing calibers.

RE: The new .30 TC
I agree w/the general conscensus of the group as far as the 30tc goes. What I want to know is when are the Icons going to hit the market....I WANT ONE!!!! prob will get the 308 or 243 though.

RE: The new .30 TC
I could be wrong, but I would think that their venture intobolt actions and their "Great new Caliber" press probably paid off in their sell to S&W.
