RE: Browning pump guns

I just bought a BPS Hunter 12 yesterday, but it's been far too cold and windy to take it out and shoot it yet. I will tell you that it cycles smoothly with dummy shells, and points well for me. Word of warning, Browning installed the little button on the magazine catch that allows unloading the shotgun w/o pumping it for a reason, and when you rack a loaded (or dummy) shell out of the chamber be careful to tilt the shotgun in a manner that directs the ejected shell away from your toes. The BPS ejects it's shells with authority, and right at your feet if you're not careful. Stings a little. Otherwise it's a beautiful shotgun, easily matching the 870 wingmaster in quality and workmanship. I can't wait to take mine to the trap range.

Both of my sons own a BPS. They are very nice guns. One is in walnut and one of the nicest looking shotguns I have ever seen. The other has a black stock and shoots 3 1/2" shells. If I didn't love my old 870, I'd buy one for sure. Jim

RE: Browning pump guns

I have owned a BPS 3" for about 8 years, and love it. It kicks about the same as any other 12ga 3" pump. Shoot a heavy load and get lots of recoil. From a fit and finish point of view, it has the nicest bluing and stock finish of just about any gun I have seen (within a reasonable price range). I have the stock 28" vent rib barrel as well as a Hastings rifled slug barrel, with a cantilever mount so the gun gets double duty for birds as well as deer.

The only down side to it, if you can even call it that, is that the BPS is not as common as say a Rem 870 or a Mossburg 500 so aftermarket parts are not quite as easy to come by. That being said, I have been able to find every part I have looked for up to this point.

The only other issue is that the magazine capacity is 1 shot less than an 870 or a Model 500. Although most of the time I am required to have the plug in the magazine so it is a mute point.

RE: Browning pump guns

I took my BPS out for the first time today and I have to say I'm more very impressed with it. Not only is the fit and finish very nice, the action is very smooth and the shotgun handles very well.

I shot two rounds of 16 yard trap with it today, and not having shot trap for 10 years I still shot a 20 both rounds (not as rusty as I thought I'd be). The gun points and swings really nice. I love it!

I am, however, developing a love-hate relationship with the bottom eject. I love the fact that the empties are ejected right in front of my feet and not into the guy next to me, and if I want to collect each hull it's really easy to catch the ejected shell without the pain of having it drop back into the action. On the other hand, I don't like the fact that I can't rack the slide back, ejecting the empty, and then simply drop the next shell in the ejection port and close the action. The shells must be loaded into the magazine first. I've found that the best way around double racking the gun to eject and reload is to resist the urge to rack the shotgun immeadiately after I fire and lower the gun, load the next shell, THEN rack it. Easier said than done when one's trained themselves to pump the gun immeadiately after firing since they were 6 years old.

Otherwise, I REALLY like my BPS, and wouldn't consider going back to an 870. It's a very nice shotgun.
