243 new respect

Ok so i have a old ruger m77 sittin in the gun safe for like 2 years un touched, maybe longer. I used it as my "loaner" gun if the situation arrived. Well i was doin a little ballistic research and decided to look into the old 243 outta bordom. @200yards your 243 should hit around 1.5-2" high @100, and about 6.5-7" low at 300yards. This took me aback because i always thought of the 243 as a 100-150MAX yard rifle. I took the big bores for my 200+ shots. With 1225 ft. lb. energy at 300yards its more than enought to take down a deer. I tested myne with 95gr ammo and turns out myne is +1" at 100yards and dead at 200yards, 250yards sets me about -3". I was impressed with my little loaner and am more comfortable useing it to greater ranges now that i have a little more knowledge on it.

I know what you mean. I have a Ruger MKII in .243 using IMR4350 pushing a 100gr Hornady BTSP. I sometimes start looking at 25.06 or a .257WBY wanting more. THe reality of it is the .243 does evrything I need it to do. I only use it for antelope and it has preformed quite well over the years. The longest shot was 275 paces (pre-laser) and it dropped on the spot.

Well leave it to the sh!t starter of the forums to post a completly useless post. When I joined the forums about 2years ago it was to help inform people and chat with people that had simular interest. Glad to see you doing the same. Not to mention that a few here in these forums, self included, consider the 243 a 100-150 yard rifle. Im just tryin to pass on some intell. You spread hate and discontent. Try growin up.

There have been 1000yard matches won with the plain-old 243Win. Glad you found out before putting a box of 300 Weatherby's on your shoulder.

I REALLY like the .243. I am currently tryin to find a bare Rem 700 .243 action to build up for a varmint/deer gun.

I have a of all things a Mosseburg rifle in 243. I love it shot my frist deer with it. I have now use mainly for ground hogs{won a 7mm mag. which i use for deer}. I found a load on the internet where I get 4000fps and i've kill hogs at 300 to 400 yrds no problem.

I know alot of people who has tried to get 4K with varget and a 55gr BT. But they might hit the speed, but can't get the accuracy. I think it requires a different twist than the typical 1 in 9 or 1 in 10 twist.

A .243 will definitely be my next rifle purchase, although it is going to be a couple of years.

The .243 will do what you need it to do at more than twice that range on medium game in capable hands.

People who only shoot their .243s at targets to 100-200yards are really cheating themselves.

Roskoe 01-18-2007 08:26 PM

RE: 243 new respect

I was able to get pretty good accuracy in the .243 with the 55 gr. Ballistic Tip with only one powder - H414. And the best load was not quite full throttle - but still doing a respectable 3900 with the standard 1:10 twist barrel. I think the ideal twist for this bullet would be around 1:16.

Generally, I like the performance of the 70 gr. Ballistic Tip better than the 55 gr. BT for varmint hunting.

Roskoe 01-18-2007 08:28 PM

RE: 243 new respect

Also, the 55 gr. 6MM Ballistic Tip would be the worst hog bullet on the planet, IMO. They are real explosive. Will blow a sizeable entry hole in a coyote.

You owned a tool for that long and never read up on it?
hmm.
The 243 Winchester is a bad little man. I dont know why anyone would doubt it for deersized stuff and smaller at ranges farther than the averageperson can shoot. Ifsomeone cant make a 300yrd shot with a 243 then it is doubtfult they are going to make it with any cartridge.

I know rite. Its always been there but there where other guns 30-30 (my fav), 300wsm, 270, 8mm, 7mm, 223, 222, and others that i would grab to use first. Just never crossed my mind.

I have been gaining new respect for the .243 over the last year as well. I picked up one in a Rossi single shot .243 with a 20 gauge barrel and just love shooting it. It will be my youngest boys gun when he is old enough to start hunting.

the 223 is AR-15. And the .222 just dont get used either. Hard to find ammo for it round here less they special order it. I usually grab my 30-30 incase i choose to stalk. or my 300wsm for the stand. I will walk with it but when i hit the thick brush i would rather have the short 30-30. Why is it so hard to beleave there is a gun in my cabnet never used before, other than sighting in. I have 2 others that i have NEVER shot not one time. They were given to me by my Dad and have never been been fired by me. They get the annual cleaning and thats it, back in the safe they go.

The .243 would be great for granny biscuit. The triple deuce is an awesome little cartridge. I am sorry to see it decline in popularity.

I have no problem accepting that you own "mostly unused" rifles. I also own "stored" Firearms. I just can't believe that your Dad gave you something and you didnt even appreciate it enough to learn about it.[:'(]

RE: 243 new respect

As stated before, and I KNOW I am not the only one on these forums that thought this. The 243 was thought to be a 100-150 yard gun. I have read it with my own eyes and seen it more than once in numerous postings. Hell you might have been one, start a new account now tryin to act the part of a bullet/ballistics master. for 100-150 yards i would rather carry my 30-30, still do. But i fell more confident now about useing the short barrel smooth action of the M77 for longer shots. I dont reload and noone i know locally reloads, so fixing up a Hot/special load just isnt in the cards.

Oh, and on my old man; he buys guns from people all the time. For him to give me a gun is NOTHING out of the ordinary, and for me to sight them in and store them never to touch again is not out of the question.

NEwho im dont with this one, what started as a intell type post somehow turned into a flame war by some of the lessers of the forums (ie. Pighunter and Cryptic Gypsy). And also one reason I stopped droppin in so much in the first place.

RE: 243 new respect

I am not attempting to put you down. I know hunters that have killed deer with a 17 Remington. My great uncle has had a 222 since 1953. I have never underestimated any centerfire in my entire life. When I was 10 I received a Colt AR chambered in 9mm. I used to shoot that 9mm at 150 yards on paper and stumps. But you want to talk sh!t about me when all I was saying is that you need to open our eyes more often? I was trying to help you by telling you to help yourself. I apologize for my sarcasim. I didnt intend to hurt your feelings, spoilt-boy. ;)

Its alright, you've already shown your lack of knowledge, you don't know a great deal about firearms, or how they work, and to call me a "lesser" member is a mistake, I've have been a member for 4 years, and have had several accounts. The .243, a 100-150 yard cartridge, it is not, the .243 can kill deer out to 300 yards, but, obviously you didn't know that. Before you come in here asking stupid questions, do a little research, it'll go a long way.;)

Good combo really.
I just always liked the one gun used, one gun backup theory.

If you ever get into handloading dont look over that rifle.
