Little Help

I looking at gettin myself a good Elk rifle in 30-06. Theres a number of reasons for the 30-06 most of which is i like it. The question i have is What brand Rifle. I like the Thompson Center Encore and can pick one up for under $500. I also like the Howa and the Remingtons. Howa -$500 and Remington 700 CDL $625. Just tryin to get some ideas on the most accurate. I can shoot 1" at 200yards, i just wanna make sure the rifle i get can do the same.

Your calibur is a great choice, I have a ruger m77 in a .300wm and I really like it. Atleast give them a look.

Are you accurate with it? If so, what brand, type, and size round do you use?

I just bought one last year in 7mm Rem Mag, Stainless Synthetic that only fires the Federal Power Shock 150 grain soft points very accurately so far. I'm thinking about trying Federals balistic tips and/or Hornaday's.

Also, did you have to replace the trigger?

Savage weather warrior if you prefer synthtic stock in 30-06 will shoot 1" or better and cost under 5 bills.

I have a Ruger M77 Mark II in 30-06 and it shoots just fine. Last season it put downtwo antelope and a mulie buck. The longest of the three shots was 200 yards. It likes Federal with Barnes TSX in 165 gr.

I would think so too if you are buying a gun specifically for elk and nothing else.

I would say step it up to a .338 or .300. then you can have the confidence to take the longer shot which it seems like a lot of the elk hunters out west do very frequently.

sure the 30-06 will work fine, but if its solely for elk, I would think you would want a little bit more knock down power at the further distances. unless there are recoil issues or something of the sort, i would see no reason not to get a little flater shooting caliber.

If you are sighted in at 200, and you see one at 300, or 100, or 400, youll have to adjust more for the shot with the .30-06 then with the 300 mag, which leaves more room for error.

Thats just me though.
