Shotgun
I’m looking for a good starter shotgun that would be real versatile. I might use it to duck, quail or dove hunt and id like to use it turkey hunting. It doesn’t have to be dirt cheap but I don’t think I want to spend $1000 on a shotgun right now either.
Suggestions? |
RE: Shotgun
You'll probably get a lot of different opinions but I would reccomend the Remington 870. They come ready to shoot 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 inch shells so that would cover you and your game choices. You can also add a deer barrel later on. The thing is a work horse, easy to take apart and clean, etc. Probably get set up for less than $400. Good lookin boy in the picture with you, you'll be able to pass the 870 down to him one day.

RE: Shotgun
Either the 870 Remington or Mossberg 835. You can't really go wrong with either of them.

RE: Shotgun
Franchi I-12, Just shot mine for the first time this weekend, and it was a jaw dropping experiance. I have used a pump all my life, and let me tell you, this thing is very fun to shoot, and it only had one misfeed out of the 100 shots, and i was shooting 1 1/8 oz 2 3/4's target loads and my 200 shot break in period isn't even over.
It feels solid and not cheap, and because of the inertia system over the gas, it is perfect for waterfowl and better for dirty situations. Also, i can disassemble every part of the gun (other than taking apart the entire trigger system) in less than a minute.. Plus, its only 600 bucks |
RE: Shotgun
My first 12g was an 870 and I still use it for practically everything. There's tons of add ons, upgrades, and just plain cool looking parts and accessories (if you have a tactical loving side) for these. You can't go wrong.
I bought the 870 express magnum with a 28" barrel, synthetic stock, brand new at walmart for something like 240 bucks. Added a 10 dollar HiViz fiber optic front site and now it's pretty mean. |
RE: Shotgun
thanks for all the comments. i think im going to try out the rem 870, moss 835, and maybe the moss 935 turkey\waterfowl combo
so you folks would just a soon have a pump than an auto loader? even if they were the same price? |
RE: Shotgun
I've never shot an auto loader, we (actually my dad) own one but I've never personally shot it. I like the looks of a pump better and mine feels very natural to me so I say if it ain't broke don't fix it.

RE: Shotgun
you cant go wrong with the 870. there is a reason its the most sold shotgun. and i perfer my 870 over my 1187

RE: Shotgun
i would suggest the rem 870 in 20 gauge. exellent all around guncan be used for skeet or trap in 2 3/4'' or bird hunting in 3''. only costs about
250$ i would suggest getting the combo w/ both barrel which is a little more expensive but well worth it |
RE: Shotgun
Can't beat an 870,I have two 12.ga and a 20.ga.I also have an 835.Nice gun but I Really prefer my Wingmasters.

RE: Shotgun
New England Firearms (H&R) 12GA Pardner Pump, copied the 870 design and sells it for less, I own both and actually prefer the NEF Pardner, it just handles much better to me and was $189.00 at Sportsman's Warehouse. here is a pic and the web site link:

RE: Shotgun
remington 870, the best do all gone ever made.

RE: Shotgun
Each of the shotguns you listed are all good. Best of luck w/ your purchase.

RE: Shotgun
Nothing wrong with a 870 but for nearly the same money you can get a Bennelli Nova (comes with integrated sling swivels, 3 chokes, cool ejector button that only unloads the chambered shell, will shoot 2 3/4 up to 3 1/2", fiber optic sight, you can disassemble the whole gun without any tools , and they shoot awesome) !!
I ended up getting a SBE Bennelli and it's lighter and an automatic...........but it does not shoot any better than my Nova did !! Myhunting buddyhas a 870 and a Nova and he always hunts with the Nova !! Worth a look anyway !! |
RE: Shotgun
i have a model 88(?) maverick arms/mossberg 12 guage. my dad got it for my birthday and its $160-170 at wally world. i believe that it is the same as a mossberg 500 but im not sure. it shoots really nice though.

RE: Shotgun
Get a shotgun that loads from the bottom. With a 3 shot plug in the magazine you can still shoot 6 rounds in seconds. On your forearm hand, place 3 shells between your fingers and as you shoot, shove one in.

RE: Shotgun
I own both, an 870 and a Nova. The 870 has been retired for 8 years or so. If that tells you anything.

RE: Shotgun
I have a Rem 870 Wingmaster 12ga that my dad gave me. I am 28yrs old and he bought it the same year I was born. It has never jammed or had any other malfunction in my use nor in my dads use to his memory. I also have a nice double made in Turkey by Hyglu, but the 870 is still my go to gun for just about everything. When I was a kid my dad often used it to shoot, and usually win, local trap competitions. You won't regret picking an 870. Just look at what a lot of the police riot guns are. They do use Mossbergs also but I seen on fail that my brother owned. He now has an 870. The front part of the trigger assembly that holds it in the reciever broke, causing the front of the trigger group to drop down. It appeared to be made out of some sort of plastic. You won't find that on the wingmaster.
