Marlin 336a 30-30
Hey all,
A co-worker is wanting to buy her son a marlin 336A marlin 30-30. She found a package deal for $300. Granted the scope isn't the highest quality, but that is easily rectified. How is the gun itself? I don't know much about marlins, are the durable andgood shooters? Thanks for any input. |
RE: Marlin 336a 30-30
The Marlin 336 is a great gun. There are well over a millon of them made and most of them are still being shot. I haven't seen a Marlin yet that wasn't accurate, and as far as durability you can hardly hurt them. A friend of mine dropped mine down the side of a mountain and when she got it back other than a few stratches on the stock the gun was completely unhurt.

For a basic starter gun they are a good choice especially considering the price.

RE: Marlin 336a 30-30
I can promise you that she won't be disapointed. Probably millions of them made and I've never heard a bad thing about them. I know I wouldn't ever sell mine.

In 30-30 lever action guns, the Marlin is probably the best made gun out there. Many deer have fallen to those guns. With the new Hornady leverrevolution ammo it is a solid 150 yard gun. That is with a good scope and in steady hands.
God bless |

I have one, great gun and it should last a lifetime with proper care.

RE: Marlin 336a 30-30
I sit corrected..... kinda. It is an effective 250 yrd. round, on a 200 yard zero. leaving it 3 " high at 100 yards and 12 " low at 300 yards.
Most often, at least before this ammo came out, they were sighted at 100 yards. And even with a 200 yard zero my statement still stands. A good scope and steady hands are necessary. Especially with a new gun in the hands of a new shooter. |
RE: Marlin 336a 30-30
Marlins are the top of the heap for lever guns. They are very well built and accurate. They are so good that they put Winchester outof business!

Go for it! Merry Christmas!

RE: Marlin 336a 30-30
I agree with everything already said...
The Marlin 30-30 is a legendary rifle, 112 years and still going strong! :D It is more rugged than the famed Winchester 94, but both lever guns are equally famous with countless articles written about them. They are truely a piece of American history. Some people scope their 30-30 rifles, others don't. It all depends on personal preference. I had a scope on mine, but I soon took it off and got used to the plain open sights. Tell the co-worker that by buying a Marlin 30-30 for her son, she is passing along a tradition and her son will fall in love with the Marlin 30-30 and keep it forever. Possibly passing it on down to his grandson in years to come. Butch A. |

RE: Marlin 336a 30-30
Good point, by getting her son the Marlin 336 she will also more than likely be buying her grandson and possibly even her great grandkid a gift to truely treasure. Not to mention many memories.

I don't have a lever action in my safe, am I gonna be condemned?:(:D
|
RE: Marlin 336a 30-30
No, but I think there is an unwritten rule somewhere, that every gun safe has to have some sort of lever action rifle in it. ;)

God bless I'm hearing the 30-30 dismissed as a kid's gun, a good starter for the novice - I think this underrates a 30-30 Marlin. I've been shooting for over 30 years, and just got a Marlin. Seems to me to be a perfectly good deer rifle, no caveat required. It is good-looking, too. |

RE: Marlin 336a 30-30
if you could find one in .35 rem, i would say dont wait a minute. just that the .35 seems to be a better cartridge than the 30/30. even though the 30/30 is an very deadly round
|
RE: Marlin 336a 30-30
What does the .35 Remington do better than the 30-30, other than make a hole four- or five-one hundredths of an inch bigger, at a somewhat slower speed with a somewhat loopier trajectory?
|
RE: Marlin 336a 30-30
Well, some claim that there is more knockdown power, but other than that I really do not know. I personally just stick with my 30/30. I know its capabilities and enjoy the heritige that comes with it.

RE: Marlin 336a 30-30
As of about the past 2 months, I have had a lot more respect for the old standbys like the 30-30 and 30-06, they are fine cartridges, and have been harvesting all kinds of game successfully for many years, and will continue to do so.
