Bolt Action Shotgun
 

Any opinion on these? Who is making them now? How do they function compared to a pump? How many shells will one hold?

The only company I know that makes them is Savage. They should function just fine I'm assuming.

Marlin use to make one that was good from what I heard. Of course, you had to get use to the 36" bbl.

Doesn't Mossberg still make a bolt action slug gun? They did up until about 4 years ago.

I used to have one, I believe that it was a Savage marked as a Sears. It was a 12 gauge that took a 3 shot clip. It worked pretty good, kicked like a sucker. I am sure that a newer one would work a bit nicer, probably not kick quite as bad, but the bolt action in general worked just fine on mine. The benefit to having a pump is when you are skeet shooting you can reload considerably faster.

Any trouble with the feeding or ejecting of shells, since they aren't made for a bolt action?

I wish I could use a pump, but I really need something which operates right handed as I don't have my left hand. My prosthesis works fine, but slips on the pump action. Does someone make a pistol grip for a Rem 870? That is my other option, but I thought a bolt gun would make a nice slug gun for deer hunting.

Can I shoot shotshells down the rifled barrel?

Also, is the trigger same as any other Savage bolt gun?

The shotgun that I had on bolt action worked just fine. I dont recall having any problems with the bolt jambing on the shells. As far as shooting shotshells through a rifled barrel I would think that you would be fine as long as you used lead shot.

You can shoot shotshells through a rifled barrel. It won't harm anything...including whatever you aim at. It won't hurt your gun/barrel but when you spin the shot it will spread the pattern into a giant donut shape. I'm sure they make pistol grips for an 870, they seem to make everything imaginable for it!

Browning marketed one once, for a short time. It was a very nice slug gun. It might be worth a little time trying to find one. It was a rifled barrel, and it shot very well. There are also a couple of custom makers. Contact some dealers in Ohio or Indiana-they should be able to help you, since they are slug gun states. Contact Gary at E&E guns in Tell City, Indiana. I consider him to be an expert. You can also contact Big Steve in Evansville, IN. I have not talked to these guys in a few years, but they are good.

Yes you can get a grip for the Remington 870.

Have you considered a break open single barrel. The Encore would make a very very very fine slug gun. Tom.

I have owned a Savage 610 12ga. 3" bolt action shotgun for about 6 yr. have 3x9 scope mounted on it and it shoots fairly well. I was getting about 1 1/2" groups at 100yds. using the remington copper slugs. This model came with a synthetic stock and would just kick the bejesus out of you on the range. I had tried to have a recoil reducer installed but there was no room in the stock. A Simms limb saver pad may help, but I have retired this gun for a T/C Omega 50 cal. that is very accurate out to 150 yds.(shooting 1" groups at 100 yds. and 3 1/4" groups at 200 meters). We can use Muzzleloaders during our firearm season in Mich.

Boyd Brothers makes a nice thumbhole laminated stock for 870's and Mossberg pumps.I have one on 870 with a rifled hastings barrel and Nikon scope,I would not hesitate to shoot 200 yards using a sabot slug. You could go with an Ithaca 37 or BPS since they are bottom eject,you can shoot with either hand. Marlin,Savage, Browning and TarHunt all make bolt action slug guns.The Marlin and Savage are pretty cheaply made,ugly wood,bad fit and the Browning or TarHunt will set you back a grand or more.

Mossberg makes a bolt action Model 695 with a fully rifled barrel. It's black synthetic with a matte finish. I have one and it shoots very well with Lightfield slugs. My son used it to take a nice doe on Thanksgiving day. Reasonable too if I remember right. I've seen a few used and if you go to gunbroker.com, I'm sure they will have some on there so you can see it. There was a Browning listed in the classifieds forumon this web sight in 12 ga, and fully rifled.

I'm not so interesteed in an auto because:
1) reliability with slugs, to light clay bird loads.
2) cost. It seems to cost about double to get into one.
3)cleaning. I would like something easier to clean.

I haven't owned a shotgun before so I'm not completely sure about the reliability and difficulty cleaning. Is the 1100 more difficult that the 870 to clean?

Not really. Especially if you get a cleaning kit like the OTIS one. No rigid cleaning rod, but flexy cable. Does as good as any other. Plus, the 1100/11-87 are quite good for skeet. I have a buddy who shot comps with his. Did quite well too.
