Without knowing for sure, I bet it was due to lack of interest in that particular caliber. Savage sells a ton of muzzleloaders and rifles in smaller caliber up to popular centerfire calibers, and I guess .458 was likely not one of the hot sellers.

I read someplace that Savage is designing a new DG rifle right now. Can't confirm that as I don't recall where I saw it.
