BPS, 870, Nova...which to choose???
I'm wanting a 12 gauge 3.5" for waterfowl upland and maybe turkey and deer in the future. I know I need an all around gun but am wondering if the bps is worth the extra money, i've pretty muchdecided on an 870 super magnum in black with a 28"barrel, a local dealer has a new one for $330. I can pick up a bps for more, but not sure if it's worth it. I'm also wondering about whether or not to get it in camo, kinda worried about the camo scratching off. Also, remington is offering 30 bucks back and browning is offering 75 off a 3.5 bps..
thanks |

I have both a BPS and an 870. Each one has worked perfectly, but you wont regret spending the extra $ for the browning.-

Handle the guns and see what feels the best to you. If possible, try to find some that you can shoot a little to get an even better feel for the shotguns. Admittedly, I've never shot a BPS but have handled a few of them. My person preference (because of feel, performance, price and availability of aftermarket accessories) is the Remington 870.

Yup... Gotta go with the 870. I mean everybody's got one or has at least shot one. The 870 is the best "go anywhere, do anything, drop it in the mud pick it up and keep going, type of shotgun around".

I'd have to say go with the 870. I own the exact 870 your describing and it works great on ducks, gease and i also use it on grouse. Plus they have been around forever and are extremely reliable. Awesome guns

Here's another vote for the 870. I think $330 is a little high though. I bought several last year for $220 after rebates (black, blued 26" barell, 3.5"). In fact, just picked up a 02 gauge for my son for $200 after rebates.

RE: BPS, 870, Nova...which to choose???
It is hard to beat the 870, I got two for my son, one is set up for deer with a rifled barrel and receiver mount holosight, and the other for upland birds.
I picked up a new Nova with bird barrel (includes 3 chokes) and cantilever deer barrel for $400 on Gunbroker. It is a bit heavy with the 3.5" receiver, but with the synthetic overstock is pretty bulletproof, and the stock is extremely easy to handle, even when wet. The 870's a great gun, but I personaly prefer the feel/handling of the Nova stock for myself. |

I have both the nova and the 870.
I will take the 870. It feels like a real shotgun |

RE: BPS, 870, Nova...which to choose???
I have both and 870 and a BPS. I like the BPS better. It looks nicer and, for me, it shoots nicer. I think it's just built better andoperatesmore smoothly. Neither have given me any real problems. If you get an 870 get a wingmaster. Remington's bead-blast finish is a pain to clean. I'm sure you'll get plenty of 870 votes because everyone and their brother has one, but take a look ata BPS.

RE: BPS, 870, Nova...which to choose???
I have an 870 12ga. I want a BPS 20ga. But when I actually get a 20ga it will probabally be an 870. Because I treat mine like crap, and it always works. One of the guys I hunt with has an 870 that he has had for nearly 30 years, and only gets cleaned after the season (we hunt everything, in any weather) and it had never misfired on him. That says a lot about how they are built to me.

RE: BPS, 870, Nova...which to choose???
870 all the way. I have a new full realtree Express Supermag I paid $290 after rebate at walmart. I have a tactical rig Express I got when i was 8 and I have a 25-ish year old Wingmaster that is the sweetest shooting shotgun I've used and it looks like hell.

RE: BPS, 870, Nova...which to choose???
Whichever fits you best, but I would buy the Nova for waterfowl, and an 870 for deer. That way you have two guns, each dedicated to one type of hunting. I really like my Advantge Timber, 26", 12-ga. Nova for turkeys. The camo is very durable and it's quality is amazing. The 3.5"shellsfunction well in the Nova. I have friends who hunt waterfowl and swear by their Novas.Deer barrels are expensive for the Nova, unless you get theall-black combo. That's why I suggest just getting a cheap 870 for deer.

RE: BPS, 870, Nova...which to choose???
IMO the BPS is a better shotgun. I have a 3.5" 12 ga. BPS that I use for turkey andI like itbetter thanmy 870. Nothing wrong with an 870 but I just think the BPS is worth the extra cost.

RE: BPS, 870, Nova...which to choose???
Go with the bps if you can afford it. It's worth the extra in my opinion. Both are great though.

RE: BPS, 870, Nova...which to choose???
Nova. 870 is a good gun. Just like the unique look of the nova, as well as the performance. The 870 has such a great response because it has been around for ever. The nova will be to. Give it time.

RE: BPS, 870, Nova...which to choose???
I am a Nova lover. Gone swimming with that gun a few times and never an issue. Very tough and perfect for waterfowling. Like the capability to handle whatever load you want to shoot. Tough as nails gun.:D
