Hello and welcome to the wonderful world of muzzle loading! What I have to tell yu could fill a book so I will keep it shot. Things I would need to know is what type of gun do you have so I know if it can use magnum loads and the twist of the barrel so I know if it can use sabot rounds or round ball exct. Check out the black powder forum below its a welth of info.

I use a 350 grn Precision Rifle bullet with the all lead bullet and polymer tip. I use 90 grns of 777 or 100 grns of clean shot (Pioneer).

I have been using Hornady XTP 260grs and 85 grns of Pyrodex and using Large Rifle Primersout of a Knight "Wolverine" for years.

RE: muzzleloaders

I have had good luck with 240-300 gr sabot projectiles under 100-120 RS or90 -110 777. The past few years I have been using the 250gr sst under 105 gr 777 ffg. For sheer cost effectiveness I shoot a pile of 240xtps under 95gr 777 ffg, then switch as season looms. I have owned Gonic, TC's, Knight and Rem 700 inlines.

This year I will be giving the Savage 10 II a go. The benefits of being able to use smokeless powder are to hard to ignore any longer(legal here), soI just had to try a new toy. I will be running 250gr sst under smokeless powder but haven't fully decieded yet which one, either IMR 4759 or Viht N110 have given me great results.

245 or 295 grain powerbelts and 100 grains or two pellets of powder is a basic load that works in alot of guns. Each gun needs to be tweeked a little, but that is the fun part. Shockwave sabots are a good choice, too.

Just a little foot note to Skeeter's post. For anyone who is new to muzzleloaders and doesn't know this.

NEVER USE SMOKLESS POWDER IN A MUZZLELOADER (unless it is one like the Savage, mentioned by Sheeter, that is oked by the manufacturer).

I'm with Skeeter. I ordered a Savage last year and will never load black powder again!

Think I have one of my savages ready to hunt this year.

My omeaga likes the 240gr hornady xtp's and 150 gr pyrodex 777 pellets. Devastating on deer and very accurate.

RE: muzzleloaders

Barnes 245gr 150gr Pyrodex pellets. Get pass-through and accuracy.

Another Savage shooter here. Most likely I will be shooting 45 grians of 5744, a 250gr XTP, MMP HPH-12 sabots, and Win. 209 primer.

Skeeter, give 42-43.5 grains of VV N-110 a try with thoase 250gr SSTs. I think you'll like the results.

Like Duffy says:

I think the whole point of hunting blackpowder is hunting with BLACKPOWDER! I myself, will not sell out. The smoke stick would not be the same without the smoke.

Anthony, you do know that Pyrodex or 777 is not Blackpowder but rather a BP subs? Not starting anything, point is the sport has evolved a lot since the original front stuffer's. It boils down to personal choice and what is legal in your area. Basically to each their own, lets stick together vs division.

1 shot 1 kill, thanks. I have been shooting N110 - 43gr is the sweet spot under the 250gr SST in my rifle. Though 43.5gr of 4759 shoots slightly better. I am waiting for the mercury to drop and test closer to hunting temp before Ichoosewhich one will be in for Oct 1!

RE: muzzleloaders

I am aware that it has evolved, but it should only go so far. 777 still smokes and even though no one uses "real blackpowder" anymore, I hate to see it go further than pyro. It still smokes..:D

You're right though, to each his own. No argument intended or anything. I just stilllike to try to duck around the cloud to see if I hit my deer.;)

To each their own. If you wish to hunt BP or substitute and not smokeless then by all means. I enjoy using smokeless in my Savage for the ease of cleaning and performance. I think that we all wish to find the same satisfaction from shooting and hunting, regardless of means.

I have a question, Why do you need such a heavy bullet for deer? I bought .50 cal 250 gr power belt bullets for my muzzle loader and they shoot great but I've never shot a deer with it yet. Do you really need the extra weight so the bullet holds together? Just curious.

no ...245 grain with 100 grains of powder drops them in thier tracks.

a 250GR POWERBELT WILL DROP ONE DEAD In its tracks. (sorry for caps). I have been thinking about going back to powerbelt. I love the full caliber size. They are really accurate and I like the hollowpoint better than the tipped bullets.

I betif you did a poll the250 class is the most used weight for inlines and deer. It really depends on usage and gun preferences which bullet style and grain you choose. I have never used a powerbelt in the field so can't comment to how they may work, but nothing wrong with a 250gr bullet and accuracy!

I have shot deer with balls to 460 cronicals, they all work when put in the right spot. The 250 classhas accounted for the majority of my deer harvests with an inline and haven't felt I needed more from 30-210 yards.

RE: muzzleloaders

The only bad thing about the powerbelt is the low BC. Theyre very blunt because of being full caliber. But they still shoot good out to about 150. I use the hornady xtp mag now because they carry energy better at 100+yds. But the powerbelts hit very hard.

RE: muzzleloaders

I almost strictly use 250 grain SSt's. There are some venturous folk that have Savages or SMI's with .45 cal barrels that use smaller, but 250 would likely be the most common.

I use 120 grains of 777 and a 250 grain QT by Precision Bullets.
