i have five bar's, two o6 and two 270 and a 243. i like all of them, the new one is the stalker in 270 cal. i use the power point 130 gr in the 270 and love it, when i go to my spot that has hogs i take one of the o6 with a 150 gr power point. i use the 100 gr power point in the 243 and have killed a bunch of critters with all of them .one thing about the bar's is you have to keep them clean or face a jam up. once you learn how to take them down and clean the gas piston and bolt they are as easy to clean as any auto firearm. if you have to have a gunsmith clean it you will spend $40.00. but i will do it for $20.00. i live in toccopola ms.

The 270 hands down for a 250 yard shot it would be hard to beat.

I still have my first deer gun. It is a Savage mod. 110, 270. It loves the hell out of the Horn. 130 light mags. I've got a old Redfield Golden 5 Star on it and I really dont think it will ever miss a Deer. I might be a little Pred.
but I still dont think it will.

Hard to beat the Browning A-Bolt in 30-06. I have had mine for the last couple of years and it is a fine killin stick. Recoil isn't bad with a 150g bullet. Many ammo choices at better prices. Good luck with the purchase.

If you have a 30-06 in a bolt don't buy another even thougt it is a great caliber.Go with a .270,with them two guns you can shoot just about anything you can think of but some of the big african game. The recoil of a semi auto is more than a bold if you ask me.

I am thouroughly impressed.....A post with a good rifle posted for once

Hehehe

Seriously, I was like OH MY GOD, took me by surprise!

ORIGINAL: hardcorehunter

I would get the 30.06; way more ammo selections. I would also go for the collector 30.06 bar rifle that browning produced this year to celebrate 100 years of the 30.06. BTW, welcome to the forum!!!HCH

Well ,he gave me three caliber choices and he wanted a Bar.The 30.06 is a great, versatileround and if you are buying one why not the collector gun. I am a bolt action man myself except for my two Ar's. HCH

I have hunted with BAR's for over 20 years, my father has used them longer than that. He currently has a 308 and I have a 30-06. Both of them work great for deer, but as has been said previously there is a much greater selection of 06 ammo around, and often you can pick it up for less money.

However, if you ever get a chance to go moose hunting, I like the 30-06 better. Bigger lead, a little more impact, I think its just a better caliber for moose. I have taken 2 with 30-06 bars, and my father has taken one, he used mine for his moose.

The only bad thing about the BAR's is they, and all other semis, are illegal in lots of other countries.

I own a Bar 30-06 and love it. Great all around caliber and the recoil isn't all that bad either

what over the counter loads would you guys recommend for deer out to 300 yards using the 3006 or 270 in situations that you need to put the deer down where it stands or have a good blood trail to follow . for instance a road with pine plantations on both sides that's growed up real thick. i know bullet placement is the answer butwhataboutshots that are not on the mark.what bullet wgtand kind and manufacture would you recommend.

#1 I like 308, Over 250 yards shot buy something other than BAR.

#2 Bar has an odd balance to me, shoot and carry one before you buy.

#3 Do not but the ultralight, have seen only a few but one of them I was working on due to wear in the receiver, might be one in a million, but the alloy bothered me.

#4 if you buy one, buy steel bases for scopenot aluminum, and usethread locker.Do not overtighten Base screws I have personally stipped out receiver, and have fixed a couple.

#5 MY BIG PROBLEM WITH BAR, the front lug, that holds the forearm and is the sling swivel, will affect accuracy. Any time this is moved, tightened, loosened, like when cleaned or if the sling carry causes it to loosen, I am suspect of sighting.

#6 I will say that if you need an automatic it fires very reliably and in mechanically sound(not the ultra-lights though). I also have seen great accuracy out of these guns, and know they shoot well if everything is perfect.
