I have had half a dozen or so of the Springfield Armories 1911's. Even though I had them all tricked out, they worked quite well right from the box. They used to be pretty reasonable but I have not priced one lately.

I think paras are double action
Nope. Some newer Para-Ordnance models are DA, or "lightdouble action" or whatever they call it now, but the originals were ALL 1911 style single actions.

I'm for Kimber. I have the Pro Eclipse and love it. Even bought a Marvel 22 LR conversion for it. I dont think you'd go wrong with about any Kimber, all i see is quality there. Good luck, Jack

Any of the several Kimbers under $1000. I have several Kimbers and fired many matches with one of their stainless gold match models with no modifications, none better in my opinion. The only dissapointment you will have is when you find yourself liking the Kimber over your Colt. I have two Springfields I may as well sell, don't use them because the Kimber's fit and finish made them feel like junk.

Kimber hands down...

I'd take a serious look at the new Taurus - see this month's American Rifleman........
Good luck finding one... I love how the magazines get the hype built up for a gun way before it's ever available.

Exactly... This is my Para Ordnance P13 (it's a copy of the Colt Commander 1911 model). It's single action, with the high capacity "double stack" magazine (12 + 1 in the chamber). This was used for only $399 at a recent gun show.

I've got a Colt series 70 Commander that my friend who is a gunsmith (a real gunsmith, not a parts replacer who is a former , Perry,NY,Pa. winner and a President's 100 . The whole costs ended up $650 and would put it up against any gun costing 3x's that price.

I got a stainless Para-Ordnance P14-45 Limited for about $750. Very nice piece. slightly finicky with reloads that I used in my other P14, but I shortened the OAL on the round and haven't had any troubles since. 1000's of rounds through both of them and I think they're pretty decent pistols for the price. I've added extended base plates, so they hold 17-18 rounds of .45 acp. Quite a handful of firepower. The Limited has lots of nice bells and whistles that don't come on plain jane 1911's. Checkering on front strap of the grip, beavertail safety, adjustable sights. Grooves on front of slide. Beveled ejector port. If you were to take a base model pistol and having a gunsmith upgrade it to the same level, you'd end up easily spending $1200.
