Anybody use the remington 597.
Looking for a new 22mag or 17wmr for general smallgame hunting, bushytails to close range coyote and this looks like the winner. I needed a semiauto mag for coyote, fox, etc otherwise I would just opt for a bolt action22lr.

RE: Anybody use the remington 597.
Yeah, we got my dad one for his birthday a few years back. Biggest waste of money ever. It would jam every five shots. Called Remington about the warranty, took it to McBrides in Austin, and had it 'fixed'. Got it back and it was doing the exact same thing. they said it was the magazine feeding wrong, but we have tried two others to no avail. I bought myself a used Ruger 10/22 at a gun show for the same price as the 597 new. Definetly Ruger if you have a choice. The 597 has a dead in hand feel, due to the synthetic stock, overall a dissappointing gun from Remington.

I agree with Aggie. The 597 has a while lot of plastic on it and would jam a lot. I traded up to a marlin and love it. It does not jam with the same ammo and is a good shooter.

i have one in all 3 calibers. they jam ocassionally but i find them to be a good rifle for the price. i agree i would rather have them all be wood stocked but owell. if you keep them clean and lubed they perform as good as anything else and dont stuff the magazines full. i put 10 in for the 22 but i only go about 6 on the mag clips. the clips are the only down fall ive founds about it.

They don't call 'em the "jam-a-matic" for nothing!
They are better used for door stops, paper weights, or trout-line anchors! |

I have the 22mag ,it has yet to jam on me.Maybe I got a good one but it just shoots good for me . I have a ruger 10-22 that I love it is as good as it gets. I have shot the mag more but both get a good workout from my kids !!!!

RE: Anybody use the remington 597.
I have a 597 M and it's never jammed even once and i've owned it for several years now. I use it to shoot pest around the farm and it's quite accurate. I have a straight 7.5X Leupold on it. There were issues with early guns jamming and it caused 3 different designs of the clips... I think for the most part Rem. is past those problems.
I like the synthetic stock as i bought it to be maintance free, and it has been! Many times it sits out in the shop or ??? and i don't have to worry about wood swelling or anythingelse like that. I also have a Ruger 10/22, and it's a total PITA to carry around, as it feels like a beached whale in your hands!!! The clip requires a FAT stock and i just hate it!! In general i think you'll find the Rems. are more accurate "out of the box" than the Rugers too. I shot the below group while leaning onmy 4 wheeler so, i'm sure it would be even better off a bench. I was just kinda curious on how much a 597 magnum runs at a gunshop? Looked on gunbroker but they didn't have any new ones.

200.00 wholesale, so say 300.00 retail.

RE: Anybody use the remington 597.
My nephew got one last month and it is a great little gun. We shot a brick through it last week and had no troubles. The gun is very accurate and a lot of fun. It has the camo synthetic stock. overall a good purchase.

I have one in 22lr, and it jammed more than it cycled. Then I found out about a fix on the net, and it worked very well. I have now put 500 rounds through it without one hiccup. That being said, I would opt for a gun on the 10/22 platform. You have more options, and you could switch the caliber later very easily. Good luck.

RE: Anybody use the remington 597.
In all honesty, the 597 is a decent plinker/small game gun. The accuracy isn't that bad, but a target gun, it is not!!!
Mine is one of the early models, and Remington may have fixed the jamming problems in the newer versions. I still use mine on the range, (mainly for passing time while my big guns are cooling) and if I get the opportunity, I'll probably use it for casual Squirrel hunting. I have found that by not fully loading the clip, I don't have near as many jams, so the problem is more in the clip, than the gun itself. However, there are many better guns on the market, in the same price range! So, the real issue to me as a 597 owner is, "would I buy another 597, or recommend it to a potential gun buyer?" And my answer would be a definate NO! |
RE: Anybody use the remington 597.
Remington may have fixed the problems with the 597, but the one that I owned has soured me on Remington products forever.[:@]
I won't buy another rinfire semiauto again anyhow, I pretty much consider them to be toys. For around the same price as a 597 in .22 magnum, a guy could buy a CZ 452 which a much better rifle. |

RE: Anybody use the remington 597.
I've got a 597 that I bought about 2 years ago. I had the jamming problems like some others here. I may get some newer mags and see if that helps. Not sure I'd recommend it at this point to anyone. Thought about selling it at one time, but I hate the idea of sluffing off a gun that I am having problems with on some unknowing buyer.
