marlin 22 mag
i just traded for a new marlin 22 win mag ,model 982s. its a stainless bolt action with the seven round clip. the gunis new and never been shot, i got 2 new boxes of 40gr. cci maxi-mags hp. after cleaning the packing greasei shot it 9 times yesterday after i got it andhad no problems, today i put a scope on it andput 13rounds through it with two rounds not firingi think the 9th and 11th rounds but the unfired rounds had good firing pin marks and i put them back in the clip and both fired the second time. reckon it was the gun or the bullets. i have never had any bad cci 22 cal shells before and this is the first marlinrimfire i have owned ,i dont know if maybe i didn't bolt the bolt hard enough or it was the bullets. i am going to shoot the rest of the box of thecci'sthrough my other mag rifle and shoot a box of super x shellsthrough the marlin and see if i have any misfires, i have always used the super x shells but the store didn't have them so my wife got the cci's. anyone had any misfires with this type gun or the ccimaxi-mag bullets.

RE: marlin 22 mag
I have no experience with that rifle, but I am very familiar with CCI and use them religiously in most of my .22s. I have had some Rugers that hated CCI ammo, mostly the MKII.
I'd run a few more through it, could be a bad lot. Try some other brands, see if they have the same problem. |
RE: marlin 22 mag
I own a Marlin 22 mag and have never regretted the purchase. The little gun is accurate and reliable. I would shoot some different types of ammo before trying to reach any conclusions. Good Luck

RE: marlin 22 mag
I have a regular Marlin .22 and I love it. Though it shoots the cheap Remington sheels better than the Stingers. You need to see which brand your gun perfers.

RE: marlin 22 mag
cci is reliable but if there was good firing pin marks on the case then i would bet it was the shells. i had a marlin bolt 22 mag and i put thousands of rounds through it and it was very accurate and reliable.

RE: marlin 22 mag
I own a model 25 MN and have shot aseveral hundred rounds through it most of them being CCI Maxi-Mag's, andI have never experienced the first misfire of any kind. I would bet it was the shells if the firing pin hit in the right area, and it was deep enough it would have to be the shells. Don't give up on the Maxi-Mag shells, unless you continue to have problems with other boxes of shells.

RE: marlin 22 mag
i have two marlin BA 22 mag rifles that are quite old and purchased used. niether has ever mis-fired. as has been said CCI ammo ispretty reliable.
i'd spray the bolt with degreaser, dry and test fire. if it happened again i'd contact marlin. also check the chamber ta make sure it's clean. early |
RE: marlin 22 mag
i have the exact gun and i love it. always carry it with me just in case. its good for small game and midsized game upto big softskinned animals with the proper shot placement. I love my Marlin Mag and i get 5 shot group inside a inch at 75-80yards and about a inch and a half at 100yards

RE: marlin 22 mag
i shot about 30 of the cci shells i had left through my other 22mag and all fired. i tried a clip full of super x in the marlin and two misfired, so it wasn't the bullets. after comparing the spent hulls from three different guns i could tell the marlins firing pin wasn't making the same mark as the other guns. i removed the firing pin and sure enough the striker end that hits the rim of the shell was defective, instead of it being square it was rounded with a small crater like a welding pit. i reground the the tip of the firing pin and it works fine now, makes a good heavy mark and has fired all the rounds so far. i got in contact with marlin and they are sending a new firing pin to my local gunsmith. the person at marlin told me that they have had a few of the guns come back with the same problem.

RE: marlin 22 mag
How do you like the 982? My son is 12 years old and I am thinking of getting him one as his first rifle. He is mature and ready for a firearm to shoot at his grandparents. What type of scope did you put on it? I am searching for the best price on the rifle and deciding on the type of scope to put on it. Have you fired any Winchester ammo through it? I have heard some good things on that ammo.

RE: marlin 22 mag
i like mine except for the bad firing pin it had. mine is the stainless model with the syn stock and is light even with the scope which is a old tasco 3x9x40 pronghorn. its got the fiber optic sights but i took the back sight ramp off so i could mount the scope without see through mounts. i been getting rid of the water turtles that steal my fish at my little lake, there are three or four stumps in the back waters that the turtles sun on. most of the stumps are at least a 100 yards from my shooting table, using the cci bullets i get no drop and the gun puts the shots dead on target every shot. the win. bullets do about as good. i got my son one also but it has the blue barrel and a honey colored laminated stock. the guns are cheap made but look good and shoot good for the price. if i get the chance i would get another one for my little girl.
