Scope for the hard kickers??
I have a new 338 Remington Ultra and 375 Ultra mag. What scope would you recommend for these rifles. I definitely would like something with long eye relief.
Thanks!! |
RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
Ziess conquest 3x9x40.Bright,clear and a constant 4" of eye relief at all magnifications.

RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
Ditto the ziess is awsome. I have it on a 300rum. Also leupolds have quiet a bit of eye relief but for the money you cant beat the ziess imo

RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
Ziess is a great scope, but for sheer toughness its hard to beat a Leupold. They can take a lot of hard recoil, and general abuse. I think the eye relief is around 3" though, depending on the model.

RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
IOR is among the toughest of scopes. thier 30 mm tactical series is not cheap but of the highest quality. IOR are the largest supplier of millitary optics in the world. Thier stuff is just gaining paopularity here in the US. They are made in europe (Romania). The 2.5-10x42 in a 30mm body should set you back about 700 bucks. here is the link
www.valdada.com Weaver makes a great scope called the Grand slam. It is made in japan, has pretty good optics and is said to be tougher than most scopes and is made for hard kicking calibers. Weaver literature indicates that this scope is not prone to shifting zero when subjected to heavey recoil. The 3-10x40 is areound 320 bucks. okcmco |
RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
Leupold has always been good to me, from the .308 to .338 I shoot for game and for target competition.

RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
I had a Redfield Tracker on my 416 Rem. Mag. I also had a Aetec on it for a while. Both held up well. The Redfield however was an old one, not one of the new ones. That old 27x Tracker has been on at least 15 different rifles . Its 35 years old and still as good as new.

RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
The 3-10 x 40 Weaver Grand Slam scope is a good scope with 3” to 3-1/2” eye relief which insist bad but I would be hesitant in using it with a heavy recoil rifle. The Conquest with 4” of constant eye would be a better choice or something along that line. Good luck...

RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
I always go with the Leupold and Zeiss on my 300RUM's. but 338 and 375 are different animals.
I think D'arcy Echols who builds alot of big boomers for africa claimed the scope that held up the best was fixed power Leupold Vari-X III's. |
RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
It's hard to beat Ziess or Leupold.
I prefer to try to keep my money here in the states ( Leupold). Just my opinion. hunter338 |
RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
I have a Leupold 1.5 x 5 Vari X III on my 375 H&H and love it. Another excellent choice would be in the 2.5 x 8. If you intend to use your big bore for dangerous game, the 1.5 x 5 would be my choice for the simple reason that on 1.5 power you can pick up a moving target rapidly, say a brown bear that saw you before you saw him and he is having a bad day.[:-] Both have very good eye relief and enough magnification for just about any game where a big bore is needed.

RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
Look on Kenny Jarrett's website. He insists on big boomers using the Leupold VS-III 1.75-6X32. If it's good enough for him I suspect it will be good enough for you.

RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
I use Kahles 2.2-7x36 scope on my 375H&H
|
RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
The hardest kicker I have is a 416 Rigby and it wears a Swarovski 1.5x6x30 Pro Hunter and has held up well over the years. My 375 H&H uses a Zeiss VM series and the 30-378 Wby Imp wears a Leupold, they all have served me well.
When it comes down to it, any scope can take a chunk out of you if you dont have proper form regardless of 3 or 4 inches of eye relief on a hard recoiling gun. I shoot so many different calibers, scope combinations, triggers (both pull and release) that I have to make a mental effort to know what I am about to touch off. I have almost been bitten a few times on the bench because of a mental lapse.:D |
RE: Scope for the hard kickers??
guys FYI - On the same thought,I see that Leupold now makes a weaver style ring. I don't know how long they have been making them but they have a metal block that slips down into the notch in the base and is tightened via an allen screw in the bottom of the ring saddle. From what I've heard it is the strongest ring of this style and is being used alot by shooters with 460 and 500 S&Ws.
