RE: Savage v. Ruger

Having experince with both i would say go with the savage if thats what you like. they have a great trigger and the price is right. If you like the ruger buy it, it has a great mount system and most gunsmiths can eaisly tune the trigger. Both guns will shoot about the same so its all a matter of balance, fit and personal preference but i happento think the savage is a slightly better gun.

I have both and the Ruger did need a trigger and bedding job. The Savage shot great right out of the box. Another peeve of mine on the Ruger is that damn 3 position safety. I just can't get used to that. IMO a safety should be either on or off - period.

go with ruger because if you ever get tired of it you can get you money back out of it because the savages do not have any resale value to them. I bought my ruger from someone with a luepold scope on it from a person that lives near me for $400 and someone offered me $500 for just the gun and said i could take the scope off of it.

Wow it always to each their own. I think Rugers safety is the best going. It nice to keep the gun on safe and be able to bolt and unbolt it. You know you could just use 2 positions all the time and would be fine.

They definetly need a trigger job though. I dont understand why they dont put an adjustable in their rifles. They used to have them in the Mark I's, maybe its legal reasons.

I'm hooked on Savage cause I've never had one that wont shoot! I love every thing about the Ruger rifles except their triggers. I don't think ruger makes a bad gun, there great. The Savage also has a three position safety, although it's a tang mounted safety. But to criticize the three position safety is foolish, this allows you to unload your rifle while on safe. As to the resale value issue, the price of used Savage rifles will most likely be going up since they are starting to get the good press that they rightly deserve. The thing that hurt Savage over the years was a terrible trigger and the barrel nut which many other manfactures keyed on in an attempt to draw the customer base away from Savage. Well Savage has NUKED the trigger problem and the others are trying to catch up! As for the barrel nut, I think it's beautiful, I know when I buy one the headspace will be perfect. I also know I want be dissapointed with the accuracy.

I ordered aRuger 25-06 in stainless a few weeks ago andrequested that they do the trigger work as soon as it came into the shop. Butwhenit arrived, the trigger was excellent right out of the box. It was light andcrisp;noneed to do anything to it at all. The gunshop guy kept shakinghis head.

So I ended up getting the trigger work done on my old tang-safety Ruger 7mag instead! :)

I have no idea whether mine was some weird 'exception to the rule' or if the new Rugers just have good triggers on them. And the Accutrigger may still be better. It's just that ifall theRugers nowcome with triggers like mine, it's sure nota knock against them anymore.

Savage is the way to go. No messing with triggers or anything else for that matter. They will shoot right out of the box. Take that money you would put into a Ruger after you bought itand get the best scope you can.

RUGER hands down...the overall quality and value is far above the Savages. Its like comparing a Cadillac to a Buick, just no comparison.

As for the safetys, Ilike the one on my Remington 700 PSS,it is a regular two position, but when on safe you can still open the bolt.

If you are talking synthetic stainless versions of each I don't think you will notice a big difference between the two in fit and finnish. The ruger might have a smoother action though. I haven't looked at either side by side so I couldn't say for sure. Usually they don't put a whole lot of effort into those models since they know what they will be used for. Guys that buy weapons like that intend on using them generally, not admiring them. Not always though.

If you were talking wood high grade versions then I would say ruger would be the more pretty gun. Although savage is getting better, I like some of their laminated varmint guns. But as far as pretty wood and nice blue jobs ruger would most likely have the better finnish. Of course it might cost twice as much as well.

As far accuracy goes I don't know much about the centerfires. However with the 17 HMR's a savage will normally out shoot a ruger out of the box, and they cost almost half what the ruger version does. The ruger is the nicer rifle for sure as far as finnish and size. Feels much more like a centerfire. However they seem to be hit and miss on accuracy. Where almost every savage or marlin will shoot great out of the box, even with the crappy triggers they used to have. I can't imagine what they are like now that they have the accu trigger on them.

If it were my choice I would get the savage. Just because I like them and they work. When I think if ruger I always think of the crappy carbine autos and how innacurate they are. Just can't get it out of my head for some reason. I can think of other brands of rifles I would get before a ruger. Like a reminton 700 for example, or a browning.

Now if I was looking at a handgun I wouldn't think twice about a ruger single action. I love those guns.

Just my opinions though, and I will admit I'm not a hardcore centerfire guy since I can't really use them for much where I live.

Good luck,
Paul

"When I think if ruger I always think of the crappy carbine autos and how innacurate they are. Just can't get it out of my head for some reason" Me too Paul. Savages shoot great almost always( all that I have owned do) and I have had bad results with Rugers for accuracy.
