My 1st rifle
Iwent to Bass pro and got a 30-06 REM. 700 ADL for $290. Is this a good price? I was told they use to be $550+. I got a Simmons 3-9 x 50 (wanted the 2.5-10 x50 butthe guys said it wouldnt fit).I will be hunting deer and Hogs (avg. 175lb-400lb). I am going with150gr Winchester Supreme BallisticSilertips. Does this sound good? Or should I go up tp the 165gr? I am a very good shot. Wel do have a 1100lb. hog at the camp so im hopeing that the 150gr will do. Later on I am going to get a Savage .270. I'm not sure if they make it in a short mag. but if they do then I will be going with that for deer. Keep in mind this is my 1st rifle.

I don't know too much about hogs but I know that they have a heavy shoulder plate. You may want to consider a 180 premium bullet (as much as I don't like to say it) - especially on that 1100 lb hog geeez. Never heard of any that size

congats on the new purchase!! Yeah I was at Wal Mart the other day and saw they had their 700 ADL's reduced to $299. I thought that was a really good price (as the 710 being the other option). I went on a hog hunt in March last year and used my '06. I reload for mine, and used a 180 gr partition. Hit him directly behind the shoulder and stopped him clean. I dont know that much about hogs, but I knew from what I had read, that I wanted something with a little more penetration then a 150 gr. It may very well do the job, but I wanted that little extra.

Your sales person was full of bovine you know what. If thats what you wanted all you had to do was get higher rings for your mounts to clear the barrel being a 50mm lens. Anyway you did make a really great buy and have fun with it,and don,t forget that 270,they are alot of fun also. vangunsmith

Yes you got a good deal on the ADL. No they didn't ever sell for $550 but they were about $400 new last year. The reason the ADL's are so cheap right now is that Remington discontinued them and replaced it with the SPS as their price point model 700.
AS far as the scope goes. You bought a 3-9X50 scope but the sales guy said a 2.5-10X50 wouldn't fit??????????? You shouldn't have even needed higher rings for the other scope as they are both Simmons 50mm scopes. The sales person just didn't want to fool with it.
Heck, we mount Zeiss 6-24X72 Zeiss Diavari's on Remington 700's as well as other guns. If we can get those to fit on top of guns I know he could have set you up with the scope you wanted.
For bullet selection I would definetly use a controled expansion premium bullet weighing 180 grains on big hogs. Especially on that may weigh 1100 pounds. Look at thefailsafes, Barnes X, trophy bonded bear claw, accubond, interbond, Nosler partition, Swift A-frame and Scirocco.

RE: My 1st rifle
Hey eveyone thanks for your info. I will look into that. I always shot them in the head. I know sometimes its not that easy but I have always hit them in the head. I have missed a few but not many. Not being cocky but the other night. Well just as the sun was down I hit a 60ld. hog from 80yds on the move in a 8 foot path. So I am hoping I would be able to hit one allot bigger. I would think that would put ont down. Or knock him down to get another shot. What do you guys think.
