I just bought a 17 HMR marlin from wal mart with a bull barrel and scope for 175 bucks!!! The down side to these is the ammo. 50 rds for 15 bucks is crazy. I bought a 500 rnd box of 22 shells for 9 dollars.

Neither the savage or the marlin are a semi auto, both are bolt actions. You don't have very many choices if you want a semi auto.

Volquartsen custom, remington 597, or a ruger 10/17. You can also convert a 10/22 mag to 17hmr. I believe the Volquartsen guns are custom built rugers. I won't say for sure, but that is what they look like.

I might be missing one, but I think that is about it of auto's in 17HMR. I doubt any of them are that cheap.

You could get a savage or marlin in plain wood and heavy barrel for around 200 bucks though minus a scope. And pretty soon the savage will be out with the accutrigger. From what I understand they are not much more.

Where are you buying your ammo at? I buy HMR for $8/50, for any loading. It is $7/50 if I buy a case of 500.

I have the Heavy barrel stainless/laminate Savage, and love it. I put a new trigger from Rifle Basix in it, and put a BSA Sweet 17 scope on it. This has to be my favorite gun at the moment. Accurate, fun, and does a great job on squirells, rabbits, coons, and chucks. Good luck.

I think Marlin now has a semi auto .17. It looks good and most MArlins arepretty good shooting guns. I like my Marlin semiauto .22.

I know I will get some flack, but I would run away from any Remninton 597. They are using far too much plastic in the action. My 597 .22 would stove pipe constantly. I got ride of it very quickly.

I shoot a Savage. It is a bolt action and greeat shooting gun. I has some trigger work done. I purposely went with an inexpensive gun I could keep in the truck or on the 4-wheeler.

I recently bought a couple of HMR's.

The Ruger 77/17 Stainless Laminate has the feel and weight of it's big centerfire brother. Out of the box it's trigger was horrible, I replaced it with a Rifle Basix. What is a good point with the Ruger is the 10 round rotary magazine, they have been tried and trued forever now and you can quickly change loads simply by switching magazines. I topped it with a silver Leupold VX II 3x9 and while not a true tackdriver it shoots under and inch at 100 yards.
The second rifle and my favorite of the 2 is an Anschutz 1517. While it's more exspensive than the savage, marlin, ruger etc by no means isit a "to pretty, dont scratch" gun. It has a nicely figured walnut stock, deep rich bluing and the trigger breaks like glass at 2.5 lbs and is a absolute shooter.I use this gun as a truck/ ranch gun and while out and about it travels with me.It has a few dings and gets dusty but I got it to shoot and not look at.I mounted a Zeiss 6.5x20x50 on her and can say honestly, with it and my rangefinder critters out to 200 or so yards are simply easy targets. I have grown to love the little 17 HMR cartridge. While some will say it's not good for things bigger than a ground hog, I am confident with my shooting abilitys/shot placement to take a few bigger things.

What ever gun you choose I am sure you will grow to like shooting it, for me it's another addiction.:)

the only concern i would have with a semi auto is the automatic loading function. I bought a savage and love it as long as i use v max bullets. If i use cci hollow points and go to pull my bolt back to load another one it gets jambed.

I forgot to mention I have the savage heavy barrel with plain wood stock. I put a 6.5-20x44 alaskan guide scope on it. 200 dollar gun with a 400 dollar scope, first time I have ever done that. I love it, these little guns flat out shoot if it isn't windy.

One inch groups at 100 yards for 5 shots is about the norm for them. Some shoot better, some a bit worse. Mine is usually 1 inch or under at 100 yards off from a bench with V-max ammo. And that is right out of the box with factory ammo! I did shim my trigger and put a lighter spring in it after a while though.
