not to change up to bad because i really like the 270 and 308 neither would be a bad choice that being said i recently bought a 25-06 barrel for my encore it shoots plenty flat is fairly econimical most are very accurate and i think that it would be the perfect caliber for the type hunting you are talking about doing use 100 gr for the lopes and the 85 balistic tips for varmits but the final decision is up to you good luck with what ever you decide on any of the calibers the others have mentioned would all work equally well by the way you can get into reloading for around $400 a be prety well set-up one word of advice though when you start rollin your own you never go back to factory

By the game you mentioned, I would go with the 6mm-08.

ORIGINAL: bigcountry

If i shoot over 200 yards, I want a 270win.

I limit my shots with 308 to 200 yards on deer. On varmits, I would go higher. But I shoot 165gr bullets
200 yards on deer u got to be jokin

If your primary game is anything up to and including deer sized game, I would highly suggest a 25-06. If your considering bigger game, then I would up the caliber size a bit. Of course, with a decent shooter and a decent bullet...the 25-06 should be capable of taking elk. Like the 300 WM, the 25-06 is one of those magic calibers that shoots far better than it should.

Yes on the 25-06 or spend some bucks and get a 257 Weatherby. The coefficants on those 25 cal bullets are nice. The 25-06 isnt bad with recoil has a fairly good selection of loads/bullets if you dont reload.

Good lad. The .308 won't let you down. And yes, black bear is fine when using the .308. I have taken 2 blackies in my hunting years, one with my .308, and one with my compound bow. I never had to think of a follow shot. I used a 180 gr. bullet when hunting for bear and big game like it.
