I wonder why the 338-06 wasnt concidered over the 308 casing?? I would think the extra case capacity of the 06 would be more desirable. I am seriously concidering having one of these guns built.

RE: New cartridge what do you think?
This cartridge caters to someone like me. Since the biggest I own is a .270 win and have been looking at going to the .30's, this new round perks my interest. I do not have the time orfacilities to sufficiently practice beyond 300 yards soI would never take a shot beyond that and would only only hunt bigger game (moose andbear) as once or twice in a lifetime trips. Now with that said, why spend the moneyon a Sako for a limited use gun? I'm still interested but imo I'm the "new" market for this round coupled with collectors and enthuiasts = limited sales. Oh well, anyone still chambering the .30-.40 Krag?

Hmm, a big diameter bullet in a small case when a cartridge with a bigger bullet in the same case already exists? I'll hold out for something even more wacky- how about a 338x39?[8D]
It might have been a heck of a nice and useful cartridge if they based it off the .284 winchester case instead- a true short fat 30-06 case if there ever was one.

The .338-284 is a great round - but not very popular - really needs a long action to be able to seat the bullets out to where they should be. I have also played around with the .338-08. It is a neat little caliber - real easy to form (neck up a .308 with a tapered expander ball), not particularly hard kicking, and capable of delivering a big punch at short to medium distance. Great woods gun for elk, moose, and bear.
